Republican voters in Idaho’s new Legislative District 23 this year will elect new House lawmakers after a prominent longtime representative withdrew from his reelection race.
Because of redistricting, seats have shuffled around. While District 23 once held Mountain Home and Hammett, home to several incumbents, it now includes Nampa. A map of the district, which encompasses parts of Ada and Canyon and all of Owyhee counties, can be found by clicking here.
The Idaho Statesman sent surveys to each of the candidates in contested races, and their responses are copied below, unedited. They discussed taxes, growth and the role of government.
Rep. Rick Youngblood, a powerful five-term legislator, is not running for reelection. That leaves two open House seats with contested Republican primaries.
In the May 17 GOP primary, Sen. Todd Lakey, R-Nampa, a five-term senator, will face challenger Steve Allmer, the retired owner of a civil contracting business that builds water and wastewater treatment plants. The winner of the primary will move on to face Democrat Mik Lose and Libertarian Jon Basabe in the November general election.
Four candidates are vying for House position A: Melissa Durrant, Jason Knopp, Michael Law and Tammy Payne. Four Republicans are running for House Position B: Chris Bruce, Tina Lambert, Shaun Laughlin and Lyman Gene Winchester.
No Democrats or third-party candidates have filed to run for the House seats. All of Idaho’s legislative seats have two-year terms.
Allmer, Knopp, Law, Payne, Lambert and Winchester did not respond.
