Idaho Republican voters within Payette and Washington counties — and a part of Canyon County — will likely determine the next state legislators for Legislative District 9 in the May 17 primary election.
Eight Republicans have thrown their names in to fill three seats in the district — senator and representative positions A and B. That includes five incumbents hoping to return to the Idaho Legislature.
New political boundaries set by redistricting pitted Senate Assistant Majority Leader Abby Lee, of Fruitland, against Sen. Jim Rice, of Caldwell, for the same Senate seat. Lee is seeking a fourth term, while Rice is seeking a fifth. Challengers Jordan Marques and Kayla Dunn are hoping to unseat them.
It also left Rep. Judy Boyle, R-Midvale, a seven-term legislator, and Rep. Scott Syme, R-Wilder, a freshman legislator, running for the same House seat.
Rep. Ryan Kerby, R-New Plymouth, who’s on his fourth term, will face challenger Jacyn Gallagher, of Weiser, for the House position A seat.
All legislative positions are two-year terms, and there are no term limits.
The Idaho Statesman sent surveys to each of the candidates, and their responses are copied below, unedited. Candidates in their responses discussed property taxes, conservative values, the area’s rapid growth and infrastructure.
Syme, Marques and Dunn didn’t respond to the survey.
