In the Emmett and Eagle areas, a Republican lawmaker looking to become the next leader of the Idaho Senate faces only a Constitution Party challenger.
C. Scott Grow, R-Eagle, seeks to succeed Senate Pro Tem Chuck Winder, R-Boise, who lost his seat in the Republican primary earlier this year. Grow has recently served as co-chair of the Legislature’s appropriations committee, where he has focused on limiting agency spending and passing tax relief. An accountant, Grow’s bid for a fifth term pits him against Kirsten Faith Richardson, a Constitution Party candidate who has previously run unsuccessfully against Grow. There isn’t a Democrat in the race.
Richardson’s husband, who goes by “Pro-Life,” is a perennial candidate for statewide office in Idaho. On a joint campaign website, the two state their political positions, which include: advocating that women who procure abortions be charged with murder; barring Muslims from becoming U.S. citizens; restricting citizenship criteria; and repealing the constitutional amendments that allow for income tax and the popular election of senators in Congress.
In the Idaho House, Rep. Josh Tanner, R-Eagle, seeks a second term in the House B seat. He is also a fire commissioner in Eagle. This year, he sponsored legislation banning large banks from making environmental, governmental or social considerations, known as ESG investing, and dissolving the Ada County Highway District. He aimed to replace the elected, nonpartisan roads commission with partisan seats. Neither bill became law. He faces Jo Daly, a Democratic candidate.
Rep. Ted Hill, R-Eagle, is running unopposed for a second term in the House A seat. He sponsored successful legislation this year to protect teachers who refuse to use students’ pronouns. He is a Navy veteran and pilot.
The Idaho Statesman sent questionnaires to each candidate in a contested race this year. None responded in District 14.
The district covers Gem County, much of Eagle and a sliver of Boise.
Voters can still register to vote at the polls and vote early through Nov. 1. Election Day is Nov. 5.
