Idaho regional baseball: Eagle upsets Owyhee. Middleton rolls. Vallivue headed to state
Friday set the stage for the final day of the Idaho high school baseball regional tournaments. One Treasure Valley team has already clinched their state tournament berth, while another seven Boise-area clubs moved one win away from a trip to state.
Eagle scored the upset of the day, knocking off three-time defending state champion Owyhee on its home field in the 6A regionals. Middleton and Rocky Mountain also advanced to their 6A regional championship games in another strong showing for the 6A Southern Idaho Conference.
Meanwhile, Vallivue clinched the first state tournament berth of the weekend, winning their 5A regional tournament in Lewiston. That tournament started Thursday and ended Friday.
Here’s a recap of all of Friday’s highlights.

MIDDLETON REGIONAL
CENTENNIAL 6, RIDGEVUE 3: The Patriots scratched out every run to take a back-and-forth battle and move one step closer to their first state tournament berth since 2011.
Gabriel Herr stole home, Korbyn Nielsen and Daniel Morrison added sacrifice flies, and a two-run error tacked on a pair of insurance runs as Centennial found a host of ways to score.
Cannon Haws earned the win on the mound, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out eight. Matthew Romero threw two scoreless innings for the save.
Chance Schreiber paced Ridgevue with a 2-for-3 afternoon that included a double and an RBI.
Centennial (19-6) advanced to the regional semifinals vs. Middleton later Friday. Ridgevue (12-11-1) drops into the losers’ bracket, where it must win three straight games Saturday to make it to state.
MIDDLETON 4, CENTENNIAL 2: Vikings coach Bryan Swygart entered the week with a dilemma. He needed to pick between two ace pitchers to start the biggest game of the year, and neither jumped at the opportunity.
But Beau Ramsey came in Tuesday, told Swygart he wanted the ball and then delivered Friday.
The Umpqua Community College commit struck out seven and held Centennial to two runs on four hits in six innings for the win, lifting the Vikings (19-4) into Saturday’s regional championship game.
“He’s such a laid back, cool, calm kid that he just doesn’t get fired up,” Swygart said. “But I told Beau I want someone to want the game. … And he showed that tonight.”
The Vikings helped their starting pitcher by hanging three runs on the scoreboard in the first inning. Jeremiah Keithley sliced a double down the left-field line to start the scoring, Ramsey aided his own cause with an RBI single, and Kellen Viehweg plated a run on a sacrifice fly, giving Ramsey more than enough cushion.
“At this point, I feel like I’m kind of used to it,” Ramsey said. “They give me a lead, and I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah. We’re rolling the rest of the game.’”
Centennial threatened a rally in the seventh inning as Daniel Morrison led off the inning with a single, then moved to third on a two-base throwing error from relief pitcher Boomer Collins. But the Vikings’ closer buckled down and struck out the next three batters to move Middleton one step closer to its fourth straight trip to state.
Ridgevue and Centennial (19-7) will first battle in an elimination game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Middleton. The winner advances to the regional championship at 2 p.m. but will need to beat Middleton twice in the double-elimination tournament.
OWYHEE REGIONAL
EAGLE 19, CAPITAL 9 (6 innings): Capital jumped out to an early lead. But Eagle rallied with 13 unanswered runs to trigger the mercy rule in this regional opener.
Dallin Snooks delivered the final blow with a two-run, walk-off triple to center field. Only the mercy rule kept him from completing the inside-the-park home run.
Jack Swanstrom also had a monster day at the plate in the comeback, finishing 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and six RBIs. The Mustangs (14-11) advanced to face Owyhee in the regional semifinal later Friday.
Cooper Myers led Capital (11-16), going 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.
EAGLE 5, OWYHEE 0: Eagle’s Caleb Zawadzki pitched a three-hit shutout as the Mustangs shocked Owyhee with just its second loss of the season (23-2).
Eagle (15-11) opened the scoring with a single from Owen Brent in the fourth inning. Zawadzki kept the lid shut in a pitcher’s duel with Owyhee’s Kaleb Doty, finishing the night with five strikeouts and just 78 pitches thrown.
Eagle then broke the game open with four runs in the top of the seventh, including a three-run double from Mike Stebel.
Right fielder Jack Swanstrom led the Mustangs with a 3-for-3 night, while center fielder Easton Price went 2-for-2 and.
Owyhee will face Capital in an elimination game at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The winner of that game will then need to beat Eagle twice to claim the double-elimination tournament’s state berth.
MADISON REGIONAL
MOUNTAIN VIEW 5, MADISON 4: Carson Lupton smacked a single up the middle to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning and propel the Mavericks to a first-round win over the regional host.
Lupton also added an RBI single as part of a four-run second inning that gave Mountain View an early lead. He finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Ryan Yesford added a solo home run in the second inning.
Preston Flournoy pitched 1 ⅓ innings of scoreless relief for the win, lifting the Mavericks into a battle with Rocky Mountain later Friday.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 7, MOUNTAIN VIEW 5: The Mavericks opened the game with four runs in the top of the first. But Rocky Mountain whittled away until Ben Chandler completed the comeback with the go-ahead run on an RBI single through the left side in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The victory moved Rocky Mountain (21-6) into the regional championship, where it will face either Mountain View or Madison at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Grizzlies need to win just one of two games to advance to state.
Chandler led Rocky Mountain at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Aiden Henzler doubled and drove in two runs, and Carter Harrison also added a double.
Lincoln Mathis picked up the win for Rocky Mountain, settling in after allowing four earned runs in the first inning. He finished the complete game, giving up five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Ryan Yesford went 2-for-3 and Tav Hiaring went 2-for-4 for Mountain View (17-10), which faces Madison in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Saturday.

LEWISTON REGIONAL
VALLIVUE CLINCHES STATE BERTH: The Falcons swept through their regional tournament, clinching their first state tournament appearance since 2018 with a 3-1 victory over host Lewiston.
Cooper Crutcher recorded a complete-game victory in the regional championship, holding the Bengals (14-15) to one earned run on five hits while striking out five.
Vallivue (25-3) erased an early 1-0 deficit with a three-run fourth inning. Carson Cyganik tied the game with an RBI single, Colt Augustus drove in the winning run with a fielder’s choice, and Aaron Rayo added an insurance run with a single to right field.
The Falcons stood as a poster boy for the new regional format. Vallivue went 1-2 at its own district tournament, a performance that would have ended its season under Idaho’s old postseason format.
But a strong regular season earned the Falcons an at-large berth, and they took advantage of the extra chance to advance to next week’s four-team state tournament at the College of Idaho’s Wolfe Field.
SKYVIEW REGIONAL
MOSCOW 6, NAMPA 2: Midnight for Nampa’s Cinderella run drew one step closer as the Bulldogs dropped their opening game against the defending state champs.
Nampa opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run triple from Jaxon Wade. But Moscow responded with four runs in its half of the inning and shut the door from there.
Nampa (12-14) will face Skyview at 10 a.m. Saturday with its season on the line.
MOSCOW 11, SKYVIEW 5: If it weren’t for a six-run final inning, Moscow (18-10) and Skyview (16-6-1) could have been heading to extra innings.
Moscow entered the final frame leading 5-3 after a three-run bomb from Gunnar Holloway in the third inning. The Bears had failed to score in any other inning, but exploded for six runs in the seventh to open up an 11-3 lead, giving Skyview just three outs to try and score eight runs.
Skyview managed just two runs — good enough to have previously tied the game at 5-5 — but the damage was already done by then.
Skyview will play Nampa to keep their seasons alive at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the winner going on to face Moscow for a place in the state tournament.

FRUITLAND REGIONAL
FRUITLAND 4, BUHL 3: Fruitland remained a perfect 26-0 after seeing off a plucky Buhl (16-8) that had the game tied 2-2 at one point.
Fruitland got off to a speedy first-inning 2-0 lead after Quinn Hood singled into center field to send two runners home. But Buhl bounced back with a run apiece in the second and fourth innings to tie the game.
Hood was on hand to score again in the fifth inning, singling before stealing second and then scoring on a sacrifice fly to give Fruitland a 4-2 lead. Buhl would come close with a sixth-inning run but was shut down by pitcher Coye Coffman down the stretch.
TIMBERLAKE REGIONAL
COLE VALLEY CHRISTIAN 7, TIMBERLAKE 6: Cole Valley Christian pinch runner Chad Timmons chose the perfect time to make a run for it, walking off game one after reaching home plate on an error.
Timberlake (15-3) had clawed back from a 6-3 deficit to 6-6 thanks to a three-run seventh inning, but Cole Valley Christian (22-5) quickly responded by getting runners on first and second base in the bottom of the inning.
A bunt from the Chargers’ Tyler Romine got Timmons 90 feet from home — a defensive error at first base then allowed him to pounce and claim victory for Cole Valley.
Timberlake will look to make amends in game two on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT.
MARSH VALLEY REGIONAL
MARSH VALLEY 3, PAYETTE 0: Marsh Valley’s Tate Whitworth was a one-man wrecking ball as he pitched seven scoreless innings and had two hits to shut out Payette.
Whitworth walked just three batters and was the player crossing home plate for two of Marsh Valley’s (23-2) three runs. Catcher Chandler Bennett hit in the second of those runs as he enjoyed a two-hit, two-RBI game.
Marsh Valley and Payette (14-12) will face off in game two of the three-game series at 11 a.m. Saturday. Game three, if necessary, will start at approximately 1 p.m.
SUGAR-SALEM REGIONAL
SUGAR-SALEM 8, HOMEDALE 1: Sugar-Salem took game one of the three-game series thanks to a five-run final inning to suck any momentum out of Homedale’s sails.
Homedale (18-9) initially took the lead after pitcher Chance Martell took a chance to steal home on a passed ball. But a five-hit seventh inning for Sugar-Salem (18-4) saw the Diggers hit three triples en route to their five runs.
Homemade will look to strike back in the three-game series on Saturday at 11 a.m., with the winner advancing to state.

OROFINO REGIONAL
NEW PLYMOUTH 8, NORTH FREMONT 5: For a short while on Friday afternoon, things looked dire for New Plymouth as it trailed 5-1 to North Fremont. But a three-inning stretch where New Plymouth (13-13) scored at least two runs per inning put the Pilgrims back on top for an eventual victory over North Fremont (8-11-1).
New Plymouth ended the game with 12 hits, including a game-high three hits for center fielder Ashton Robinson.
New Plymouth will play the regional host, Orofino, in the next round of the double-elimination tournament.
OROFINO 8, NEW PLYMOUTH 1: A pair of errors in quick succession put New Plymouth in a hole it couldn’t dig out of against regional host Orofino.
Two defensive errors across three at-bats in the fourth inning loaded the bases for Orofino (22-3), which took advantage by scoring seven runs before New Plymouth (13-14) could finally end the inning. Shortstop Jaeger Tondevold had three hits and two runs for Orofino, including a single and a steal in the fourth inning.
New Plymouth now faces a rematch with North Fremont at noon PT on Saturday, with the winner facing Orofino for a spot in the state tournament.
MARSING REGIONAL
MELBA 17, WENDELL 3: Melba entered the fourth inning narrowly trailing Wendell 2-1. It left the same inning with a 17-2 lead. That 16-run inning spurred Melba to a dominant mercy rule victory, with Wendell (9-16-1) only able to respond with one run in the following inning.
Melba scored its 16 runs without hitting a single home run and went 15 at-bats between its second and third outs — Wendell finally ended the inning on back-to-back strikeouts. Seven Melba players had a hit, led by shortstop Kelton Bodily, who had three hits.
Wendell’s Julian Ponce hit the only home run of the game in the third inning to give the Trojans a brief 2-0 lead.
Melba will face regional host Marsing in the next round, with Wendell playing the loser of that game in the double-elimination bracket.
MARSING 6, MELBA 2: Marsing managed six runs off just four hits and three walks thanks to some timely hits and base running.
Two singles and an error led to Marsing’s first two runs, and then a two-run homer from catcher Luke Steinmeyer in the sixth inning cracked the game open. The two teams were tied at 2-2 before Marsing (17-6) scored four runs in the sixth. Melba (12-15) managed its two runs off just three hits.
Marsing will face the winner of Melba and Wendell on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the chance to move on to state; Melba defeated Wendell 17-3 earlier on Friday.
FIRTH REGIONAL
NAMPA CHRISTIAN 10, FIRTH 0: Five straight innings of efficient offense and lockdown defense gave Nampa Christian (18-5) a shutout victory over Firth (19-7).
Nampa Christian pitcher Kaden Mullins tossed three no-hit innings and struck out seven. If that wasn’t enough, he also hit the game’s only home run, a solo bomb in the third inning to give the Trojans a 4-0 lead.
Nampa Christian will face the winner of Firth or Challis-Mackay for the chance to go to state. Firth would have to beat Nampa Christian twice if it makes it to the next round, while it’s a single-game winner-takes-all if Challis-Mackay moves on.
MALAD REGIONAL
MALAD 3, PARMA 0: Parma (11-17) fell into the losers’ side of the bracket after dropping its opening game to Malad (20-6).
Malad broke the deadlock in the second inning when third baseman Brady Showell reached on an error, then rounded the bases through a combination of sacrifice bunts and flyouts. The Dragons tacked on a further two runs in the fifth inning.
Parma will face Grangeville in an elimination game on Saturday at 10 a.m., with the winner needing to defeat Malad twice to qualify for state.

NORTH STAR CHARTER REGIONAL
TROY 12, NORTH STAR 11: A swing of the bat from Troy’s Makhi Durrett to send the ball sailing toward right field was enough to send the Trojans into raptures.
The ball dropped to the grass below and was enough to send Hiram Abbott and Rowan Tyler across home plate, securing a win for Troy (14-9) over North Star on the final out.
The back-and-forth game saw five lead changes and only one inning, the fifth, without a run scored. The two teams combined for 19 hits and 18 RBIs. North Star (17-3) shortstop Jace Irwin led the game with four hits, three runs, two RBIs and the game’s only home run, a solo hit in the sixth inning to tie the game 7-7.
The pair will be back at it for game two of the three-game series on Saturday at 10 a.m., with game three starting at approximately 1 p.m., if necessary.
