I-84 lane closures start tonight near Boise for repainting. Here’s when, where

The Idaho Transportation Department plans to restripe a section of Interstate 84 between Meridian and Nampa, in the days after work-zone lane markings caused confusion among drivers and at least one near collision.

On Friday, May 29, and Saturday, May 30, crews will work overnight to repaint the interstate from Ten Mile Road to Garrity Boulevard, according to a construction update from ITD. The restriping, which is part of ongoing work on the new Idaho 16 interchange, will come with lane closures each night.

I-84 will be reduced to two lanes westbound overnight Friday, and two lanes eastbound overnight Saturday. Drivers will also encounter reduced speed limits, the construction update said.

Closures are set to last from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. Friday night, and from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday night.

During that time, crews will scrape up old lines and paint new ones, ITD spokesperson Jill Youmans told the Idaho Statesman on Friday. That repainting work will shift traffic in preparation for an upcoming repaving of the stretch of interstate, Youmans said.

“They are shifting lanes over even farther to create a bigger work zone,” Youmans said. “We often move in small shifts to complete work, and this is another small shift.”

Crews had previously shifted lanes ahead of a new phase of interchange construction, putting a new traffic pattern into place over the May 16-17 weekend that drew complaints from drivers and concern from police. In one Idaho State Police dispatch note provided to the Statesman, a driver described confusion about the lane markings and reported that “three cars almost got into a crash because of it.”

ITD worked over Memorial Day weekend to repaint the lines in response to concerns, Youmans previously told the Statesman.

The upcoming repainting work was already scheduled to take place prior to any lane confusion, Youmans said in an email.

“Next month, crews will mill off the current surface of the roadway and pave a new layer of asphalt,” the construction update said.

Youmans said repaving could start as soon as June 8.

The new interchange and full Idaho 16 corridor are scheduled to open in 2027, according to ITD officials.
