More I-84 closures set for Meridian-Nampa area as Idaho 16 work continues

Heads up, Boise-area drivers. Next week will bring more closures on Interstate 84 as construction of the new Idaho Highway 16 interchange continues.

If you plan on driving late at night or early in the morning, be prepared for what has become a somewhat regular detour.

On Tuesday, May 5, and Friday, May 8, sections of I-84 between Garrity Boulevard (Exit 38) and Ten Mile Road (Exit 42) will be closed starting at 10 p.m. and run into the next morning till 5 a.m. Westbound lanes will be closed on Tuesday into Wednesday morning, and eastbound lanes will be shut down Friday night into Saturday morning.

Travelers heading west on Tuesday night should expect to be diverted at Exit 42 along Franklin Road before being able to reenter at Exit 38, and the Friday night crowd should expect the same in the opposite direction.

Detours for previous closures along the route will be in effect on May 5-6 and May 8-9.

This follows a string of closures that began in January and through this past week, and have seen the rapid development of large-scale structures forming over sections of I-84 between Nampa and Meridian. The project aims to trim commutes for those taking Idaho 16 from the interstate to Idaho 44, or State Street, with travel times expected to take between seven and 10 minutes.

The priority for this week’s closures is working on the concrete “top deck” of the highway flyover. This involves pouring the concrete that travelers will be using when the interchange is completed next year, a spokesperson for Idaho Department of Transportation told the Statesman.

Thanks to good weather, ITD says crews have been able to work efficiently, and the interchange and all of the Idaho 16 corridor is on of schedule for its 2027 debut.
