‘Big change for drivers’: Caldwell I-84 ramps to close for months

Getting off and on Interstate 84 is about to become trickier for those in Caldwell. Traffic officials warned drivers to prepare for alternate routes starting next week.

The Idaho Transportation Department said it will close the eastbound I-84 off-ramp at the 10th Avenue Interchange on March 25 and the 10th Avenue eastbound on-ramp in early April.

Both will remain closed for about three months, according to a news release.

“The closures will allow crews to rebuild the ramps and connect them to the new lanes on I-84,” ITD said.

Drivers will instead need to take a detour on I-84 at the Centennial Way or Franklin Road interchanges.

“Closing the eastbound ramps allows crews to focus on rebuilding these connections as quickly as possible,” Styles Salek, Idaho Transportation Department engineer, said the release. “We know this will be a big change for drivers, and we appreciate the public planning ahead and using the detours while this work is underway.”

The closures are part of a project to widen I-84 in Caldwell that began in 2023. Other project goals include refurbishing the pedestrian overpass, building a sound wall along Hannibal Street and adding a signal at the westbound ramps at the Centennial Way Interchange.
