Headed down I-84 near Meridian? Pay attention to upcoming lane closures
Headed down Interstate 84 for a late-night drive or early-morning work shift? Think ahead if you’re going east toward the Meridian area.
Starting Friday night and lasting through the weekend, the eastbound lanes of I-84 between Garrity Boulevard and Ten Mile Road will be closed ., according to the Idaho Transportation Department. The closures will begin Friday at 10 p.m. and end 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, ITD said in a news release.
“Drivers are encouraged to plan extra time when traveling through the area at night and check 511.idaho.gov or the 511 mobile app for the latest updates on restrictions and delays,” ITD said.
Those headed eastbound toward Meridian will exit and re-enter the highway using the new ramps created for the Idaho 16 interchange, while those headed west toward Nampa will be reduced to two lanes throughout the night, according to the news release, but can stay on the freeway.
The westbound lanes will be fully open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., ITD said.
The weekend closures will allow crews to install 16 girders for the first of the two new flyover ramps. The girders, or beams, weigh approximately 42,000 pounds and are around 117 feet long, the release said.
“The I-84 and SH-16 Interchange is part of the long-term vision for SH-16,” Matthew Kreizenbeck, a community outreach coordinator with ITD, said in the release. “When complete, I-84 traffic will be able to seamlessly transition to SH-16, creating a limited-access freeway between I-84 and SH-44,” a reference to Idaho 44 (State Street).
