2A All-Idaho boys basketball team | 2022
Note: The All-Idaho teams are chosen by each classification’s coaches. The Idaho Statesman hosts the voting process and publishes the results.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: JOE REIBER, MELBA
Why he is player of the year: The 6-2 senior wing dominated as an inside-outside threat to lead the Mustangs to a state title. His explosive athleticism and steely nerves allowed him to rack up 19.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 3.0 steals per game.
Coach’s comment: “He has a knack for getting to the bucket when needed. He has stepped up in big games to lead the team both in leadership and scoring,” Melba coach Spencer Trappett said.
What others are saying: “(He) was the toughest cover of any player we have faced in 2A basketball the past five seasons. His quickness, athleticism and basketball skills were a package we had not seen at this level of high school basketball,” New Plymouth coach Jeff Lavender said.
What’s next: He is weighing several small-college options.
JORDAN LENZ, NORTH FREMONT
The two-time player of the year makes the first team for the third time. The 6-1 senior guard led the 2A ranks at 20.4 points per game, shooting 45% behind the 3-point line. But he also made his presence felt with 7.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
TRISTAN GENTRY-NELSON, ST. MARIES
The 6-6 senior forward’s versatility was invaluable for the state runner-up, who could move him into a guard spot to break presses or for late-game situations. He racked up 15.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.1 steals to make the first team for a second time.
JOHNNY SUGARMAN, AMBROSE
The 6-foot senior point guard ends his career as a three-time first-team selection. The four-year starter served as the Archers’ heartbeat and broke the program’s single-season assist record this year, finishing with 15.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.9 steals per game.
BRYLER SHURTLIFF, WEST SIDE
The future Idaho State wide receiver also left a legacy on the hardwood. The 6-3 senior forward set the Pirates’ career scoring record at 1,593 points. He repeats on the first team and made the All-Idaho team for a third time after averaging 17.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals.
COACH OF THE YEAR: SPENCER TRAPPETT, MELBA
He led Melba to conference, district and state championships. It was the program’s second state title.
