1A Division I All-Idaho boys basketball team | 2020
Note: The All-Idaho teams are chosen by each classification’s coaches. The Idaho Statesman hosts the voting process and publishes the results.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: PAUL YENOR, AMBROSE
Why he is player of the year: He was key in Ambrose’s state-leading defense (36.6 ppg), and Ambrose ran its offense through the hands of its 6-6 senior forward, an excellent passer. He led the team in points (15.5), rebounds (7.9) and blocks (1.4). He dominated the state championship game, racking up 17 points and 19 rebounds to carry the Archers to a title.
Coach’s comment: “Yenor was the backbone of our state-leading defense. … We don’t go 24-2 and win a state championship without him,” Ambrose coach Ken Sugarman said.
What others are saying: “We had no answers for him. He could do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted,” Victory Charter coach Joshua Hubbard said.
What’s next: Yenor is undecided on his future.
BRAYDEN HADALLER, POTLATCH
As a second straight all-state first-teamer, the senior point guard improved in almost every category, upping his points to 16.4 per game, assists to 5.2 and rebounds to 6.8. He was able to defend all five positions with his 6-3 size and quickness.
TITUS YEAROUT, LAPWAI
The 6-2 sophomore guard was one of the state’s best offensive players, scoring an all-class high 29.5 points per game. The White Pine League Player of the Year single-handedly took over multiple games in Lapwai’s 22-4 season.
CONNOR AKINS, POTLATCH
A first-team all-conference player in the White Pine League, the 6-2 senior forward averaged 14.4 points per game on 50% shooting. And he regularly drew the game’s toughest defensive assignment in his third year as a starter.
JOHNNY SUGARMAN, AMBROSE
Another sophomore, the 6-foot point guard averaged 11.2 points and 3.1 steals for the state champions. While the Archers’ offense often ran through Yenor, Sugarman paced the team in steals and deflections on defense.
COACH OF THE YEAR: KEN SUGARMAN, AMBROSE
He won a state title in his second year as head coach behind the state’s best defense.
