Winners of the Treasure Valley track athlete of the week contests (May 2 to May 8)

Voting has closed for the Treasure Valley Track Athletes of the Week contest.

Below is the winner. You can read about all the candidates and their accomplishments below.

  • Boys track: Brody Backus, Idaho City
  • Girls track: Asia Lawyer, Centennial

BOYS TRACK

Grayson Pylican, Notus: At the 1A WIC Track and Field Championships, he took first in the 100 meters (12.12 seconds) and triple jump (39-5.5) and added runner-up finishes in the high jump (5-6) and 4x100 relay (46.77) to help Notus take second in the team race.

Ian Stockett, Victory Charter: Running the 800 for the first time this season, he won the event in 2:02.93 at the 1A WIC Track and Field Championships and ran a leg on the Vipers’ winning medley relay team. Stockett’s 800 time is the third fastest in the state this season in the 1A classification.

Landon Helms, Emmett: Took over the top spot in the 300 hurdles with his state-leading time of 38.23 at the 2022 BYU Invitational. He also added wins in the long jump (22-6.75) and 110 hurdles (14.02).

Caleb Woodland, Meridian: Swept the 110 (14.52) and 300 hurdles (39.70) at Eagle’s Gary Gorrell Twilight Classic. Both times were personal bests and rank fourth and seventh in the state this season, respectively.

Mason Lawyer, Boise: Earned four golds at the Boise City Championships, winning the 100 (10.83) and 200 (21.88) while running the first leg of the Brave’s first-place 4x200 (1:27.71) and 4x400 relay (3:23.69) teams. Both relay times lead the state this season.

Cameron Morales, Caldwell: Established the best throw in the 4A classification this season with his winning distance of 163-4 in the discus at the Canyon County “Moke Strong” Championships. The throw is also a personal best.

Brody Backus, Idaho City: Set the bar in the 1A classification in the discus with his winning throw of 156-1 at the 1A WIC Track and Field Championships. He added a second-place finish in the shot put (40-5) and ran a leg on the Wildcats’ third-place 4x100 relay (49.24).

GIRLS TRACK

Maren Hansen, Tri-Valley: Set a personal best with her throw of 36 feet, 5.5 inches in the shot put to win the event at New Plymouth’s Pilgrim Invitational. The throw is the fourth-best in the 1A classification this season and tops among District Three competitors.

Annie Carey, Bishop Kelly: A Paralympic athlete in the T44 Division, she finished fourth in the long jump at the Boise City Championships with a leap of 16-7, which is a personal best. She has also set PRs in the 100 and 200 this season.

Gracie Strickland, Capital: Set Capital and Boise City Championships records with her winning toss of 42-10.5 in the shot put. The mark is also tops in the state this season.

Lauren McCall, Timberline: Established the fastest time in the state this season with her win in the 300 hurdles (44.33) at the Boise City Championships.

Tatum Richards, Emmett: Won the pole vault at the 2022 BYU Invitational with a clearance of 13-2. It is the top mark in the state this season and also a personal best.

Logan Smith, Boise: Took home four golds at the Boise City Championships by winning the 200 (25.55) and 400 (57.36) and running legs on the Brave’s winning 4x400 (4:00.11) and 4x800 relay (9:20.41) teams.

Asia Lawyer, Centennial: Swept the 100 (12.56) and 200 (26.83) at Eagle’s Gary Gorrell Twilight Classic.

Isis Villafane, Ridgevue: Ran a personal best and the fastest time in the 4A classification this season with her win in the 400 (57.43) at the Canyon County “Moke Strong” Championships. She added runner-up finishes in the 100 (12.91) and 4x400 relay (4:15.74).

Lydia Lindsey, Fruitland: Established personal bests and 3A classification-leading times in the 100 (12.39) and 200 (26.24) at New Plymouth’s Pilgrim Invitational.
