Former Boise State quarterback gets a head coaching job; Weaver named All-American
Former Boise State quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie has landed himself a head coaching job in the Canadian Football League.
On Thursday, the Toronto Argonauts fired head coach Corey Chamblin and replaced him with Dinwiddie, who spent the past four seasons as the Calgary Stampeders quarterbacks coach.
Dinwiddie got his start in coaching in 2013 as a quality control coach with the Montreal Alouettes. He spent two seasons there before moving on to Calgary, where he was part of three straight Grey Cup appearances from 2016 to 2018 and a championship victory in 2018. In Toronto, he inherits a team that had to win two of its final four games just to finish the 2019 season 4-14.
Dinwiddie spent five seasons as a quarterback in the CFL, playing for Winnipeg (2006-08) and Saskatchewan (2010-11). He was a three-year starter at Boise State from 2001 to 2003, and his 4,356 passing yards in 2003 are still the most in a single season in Broncos’ history. His 532 passing yards in a game that year against Louisiana Tech are also a Boise State record, and his 82 career touchdown passes are third in program history behind Kellen Moore (142) and Brett Rypien (90).
Weaver, Holani named All-Americans
Junior STUD Curtis Weaver continued his historic season Thursday, becoming the first player in Boise State’s FBS era named to the Walter Camp All-America first team.
He is the third Boise State player to be named a first-team Walter Camp All-American. Defensive ends Pete Kwiatkowski (1987) and Erik Helgeson (1988, 1990) made the cut back when the Broncos were in the I-AA ranks.
Weaver also was named second-team All-America on Thursday by The Athletic. On Wednesday, he was the only defensive player from the Group of Five named first-team All-America by CBS Sports.
With a conference-leading 13.5 sacks, which ranks No. 5 nationally, and career highs in tackles (50) and tackles for loss (18.5), Weaver was also named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year.
Boise State freshman running back George Holani was named to The Athletic’s Freshman All-America team Thursday. He leads the Broncos with 979 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
