Herbert Gums, a three-star defensive tackle from Diboll, Texas, verbally committed to Boise State on Thursday.

Six days before early signing day, the Boise State football team picked up a verbal commitment Thursday from defensive tackle Herbert Gums, who stands as the highest-ranked high school recruit in its 2020 recruiting class.

Gums announced his commitment on Twitter. He lists himself as an outside linebacker/defensive end, but 247sports lists him as a three-star defensive tackle from Diboll, Texas. He is the fourth member of the class from Texas, joining wide receivers Latrell Caples and Chance Luper and defensive tackle Nick Booker-Brown.

247sports ranks the 6-foot-1, 284-pounder as the No. 49 defensive tackle in the country. It also ranks Gums No. 593 overall and No. 78 in Texas. The highest-ranked high school senior after Gums is Caples (No. 657).

With Boise State defensive linemen David Moa, Chase Hatada and Sonatane Lui departing, the addition of Gums fills an area of need for the Broncos. He’s the third defensive lineman in the 2020 class, joining Booker-Brown and Robert Cooper.

Gums is the 13th known member of the class, which 247sports ranks No. 1 in the Mountain West. With the addition of Gums, it moved up from No. 90 to No. 73 in the national rankings.

Gums also had offers from LSU, Texas Tech, Missouri, Kansas State, Arkansas, Iowa State, Arizona, Houston, New Mexico, Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana, according to 247sports.
