Boise State defensive star Curtis Weaver named finalist for national award

Boise State STUD Curtis Weaver is a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award, the school announced Thursday.

Weaver is one of five finalists for the award given annually to the best defensive end in college football. Joining him are Ohio State’s Chase Young, Penn State’s Yetur Gross-Matos, Utah’s Bradlee Anae and Baylor’s James Lynch.

On Wednesday, Weaver was named Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the year. He leads the conference with 13.5 sacks, which ranks No. 5 in the country with three players tied for second with 14. Weaver also owns the Mountain West career sacks record and ranks No. 2 all-time at Boise State with 34.

Young leads the country with 16.5 sacks. Anae ranks No. 7 with 12, while Lynch has 10.5 and Gross-Matos, who declared for the NFL Draft on Tuesday, has 8.5. The winner of the Ted Hendricks Award is expected to be announced Dec. 11.
