‘Avalanche Alley’ on Idaho 21 reopens after rockslide closures
A stretch of Idaho 21 known for winter closures because of avalanche activity has fully reopened after several weeks of rockslide-related closures, according to the Idaho Transportation Department.
The agency said in a news release Tuesday that the state highway would reopen between Grandjean and Banner Summit, or mileposts 93 and 106. The area northeast of Lowman is sometimes called Avalanche Alley because of the steep terrain and dozens of avalanche paths that can shutter that portion of the highway in the winter.
The Idaho Transportation Department closed the 13-mile stretch of Idaho 21 on Dec. 9 following a rockslide and temporarily reopened the route for weekend travel on Dec. 13.
According to Tuesday’s news release, crews have removed debris from the rockslide and any remaining unstable rocks.
The agency urged drivers to be cautious in the area and check the 511 map online for traffic and weather alerts before traveling.
