Famous British YouTuber mocks ‘weak’ Boise burger challenge, butchers city’s name
If you’ve ever watched “Beard Meats Food” on YouTube, you’re aware of two crucial keys to the channel’s popularity.
Visiting restaurants around the globe, British competitive eater Adam Moran — aka BeardMeatsFood — rarely “meats” a challenge that he doesn’t obliterate.
But equally important from an entertainment standpoint? Humorous and self-deprecating, he is strangely engrossing to watch. (Gross, too, when his long, thick beard gets Jackson Pollock-ed with sauces and crumbs.)
So at the start of the latest “Beard Meats Food” release, filmed in Boise, you know that Beard’s joking when he mocks an old local TV newscast about a Big Jud’s burger challenge as “weak” and “feeble.”
That said? (And, no, this really doesn’t qualify as a spoiler.) You also know he’s likely to smash it.
Racking up more than 2.5 million views in its first 24 hours or so, the 10-minute video is titled, “Only one person has beaten the biggest burger at Idaho’s famous Man. v. Food diner.”
Without giving everything away? Beard has 30 minutes to devour a $45.99 hamburger, fries and drink. The burger contains two one-pound patties, 10 pieces of bacon, two layers of mushrooms (Beard winces at the thought of mushrooms), two layers of blue cheese crumbles and Swiss cheese, mayonnaise, tomato and lettuce.
The best part of the spectacle? Possibly, how badly Beard mispronounces Boise. (Trust me, it’s worse than “Boy-z.”) Give the guy a break. Beard is from Leeds, England. “I’ve come from foreign lands to try and finish Big Jud’s giant burger,” he proclaims after entering the restaurant.
Normally, half the fun is watching the faces of other diners. Often apologizing in between bites, Beard, 40, eats savagely with his hands, squeezing food and mashing it into his mouth. Unfortunately, that isn’t a strength of this video. Big Jud’s, 1289 S. Protest Road, wasn’t exactly packed with other people while Beard did his thing.
There are, however, a couple of locals watching in amusement. And, as you know, Idahoans simply must brag about what they perceive as their Gem State’s unique awesomeness.
“You’ve gotta try some of the fry sauce,” one tells Beard. “It’s good stuff. ... It’s just half mayo, half ketchup, but it’s an Idaho thing.”
(Uh, there’s a little more to fry sauce than that.)
And when Beard orders dessert? Which he almost always does?
“Get the huckleberry shake,” the local recommends.
Big Jud’s might not be the only Boise restaurant that will be featured on the “Beard Meats Food” YouTube channel, which has 6.37 million subscribers. Beard obviously has been on the prowl in Idaho. In March, he also released a video filmed at the Depot Grill in Twin Falls.
Either way? If you’re hungry, Big Jud’s in Boise and Meridian is waiting for you.
