‘Delicious chaos’ is now served where a high-profile Meridian restaurant failed

After Biscuits & Hogs opened in south Meridian in 2020, the buzz soon grew. The burgeoning Idaho brand — which urged customers to “release your inner pig” — eventually expanded to Ogden, Utah, and to northwest Meridian in Orchard Park.

But by the end of 2024, all three restaurants had closed.

Now the first Biscuit & Hogs, at 2032. E. Overland Road — previously an Original Sunrise Cafe — has been reborn yet again, as El Molcajete.

Open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, the Mexican restaurant serves ubiquitous standards such as street tacos (two for $15, three for $18) and enchiladas ($18). But there also are more intriguing options, such as house special Pollo Con Mole ($22) or the Molcajete Clasico ($35), “a sizzling, flavorful feast,” the menu says, “served in a traditional volcanic stone bowl.”

Seafood fans will find shrimp ceviche ($18) plus six entrees, including Pulpo Zarandeado (market price), aka grilled octopus.

El Molcajete’s online presence is limited. But it does pump an appetizer on Instagram: pambazos ($13). “This is not your average sandwich,” El Molcajete brags, calling the dish “a street-food superstar dunked in bold red guajillo chili sauce, grilled to crispy perfection, and packed with savory potatoes, chorizo, lettuce, crema and queso fresco.”

El Molcajete is just getting up and running; diners should set expectations accordingly. So far, it has racked up a 4.1 out of 5.0 stars on Google (25 reviews) and a 2.8 out of 5.0 on Yelp (five reviews).

Each bite of the miniature sandwiches known as pambazos “is messy, spicy, and absolutely unforgettable,” El Molcajete proclaimed on social media. “Think of it as the delicious chaos your taste buds have been waiting for.”
