PLAYER OF THE YEAR: TRISTEN SMITH, CAMAS COUNTY
The pick: The Mushers earned their first state championship since 1974 behind their 5-foot-10 senior guard, who averaged 15.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.9 steals per game.
Coach’s comment: “Tristen has been our offensive engine this year. Not only that, but he handles the ball under pressure flawlessly and makes teams regret pressing us. Whether it’s shooting open 3’s, hitting jump shots or driving to the hole and finishing tough lay-ins through the defense, he always seems to find a way to score,” Camas County coach Jamon Frostenson said.
What others are saying: “Tristen was a phenomenal player. (He) played big roles on both sides of the ball and had high energy all game long. Tight defender, could score from all facets, and flew around 144% all game,” Deary coach Jalen Kirk said.
What’s next: Smith does not plan to play at the next level but will attend college.
TROY SMITH, CAMAS COUNTY
He’ll compete for College of Idaho in football this fall, but the 6-1 senior forward got it done on the hardwood, too. Smith contributed 15.2 points. 7.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.8 steals per game for the state champions. He finished his career with 961 points.
TEAGUE MATTHEWS, ROCKLAND
The 2023 All-Idaho Player of the Year is committed to Utah for football. Matthews, a 6-5 senior center, posted 14 double-doubles this season and averaged 17.3 points, 15.6 rebounds. 2.1 assists, 2.4 steals and 3.2 blocks per game as the Bulldogs won the consolation title.
EMMETT PALAN, CAMAS COUNTY
The Sawtooth Conference Defensive Player of the Year took 17 charges this season and finished his career with more than 1,000 points. The 6-4 senior center averaged 14.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.2 steals, 1.8 assists and 1.0 blocks per game while shooting 48% from the floor.
NATHAN TWEIT, KENDRICK
After landing on the second team a year ago, the 6-2 sophomore guard moves up to the first team in 2024. Tweit led the Tigers to a runner-up finish at state with 17.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.2 steals per game while shooting 52% from the field, including 44% from deep.
COACH OF THE YEAR: JAMON FROSTENSON, CAMAS COUNTY
Frostenson guided the Mushers (23-3) to their first state championship since 1974.
