4A All-Idaho girls basketball team: The best of the best from a loaded classification
Note: The All-Idaho teams are chosen by each classification’s coaches. The Idaho Statesman hosts the voting process and publishes the results.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: BRINLEY CANNON, SHELLEY
The pick: The two-time player of the year led the Russets to a 25-0 record and a state title. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 21.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 2.8 steals and 1.5 blocks per game.
Coach’s comment: “This player is invaluable on both ends of the floor. She is an offensive threat anywhere on the court. She can shoot deep 3’s, and get to the rim off the attack,” Shelley coach Jessica Carlson said.
What others are saying: “The scouting report always started with, ‘Good luck stopping that kid.’ The combination of size, skill and athleticism was really unmatched. Her ability to see the floor and play the game was awesome to watch, not so great to prepare for,” Bishop Kelly coach Derek McCormick said.
What’s next: Cannon has signed with BYU.
SHAY SHIPPEN, SKYLINE
A first-team pick for the third year in a row, the 5-10 junior guard averaged a double-double of 23.9 points and 12.9 rebounds along with 3.1 assists and 2.6 steals per game as the Grizzlies took second at state. She has offers from Columbia, Hawaii and Southern Utah.
CARLIE LATTA, MINICO
The Utah State signee made the first team for the second straight season after averaging 28.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 3.0 steals per game. Latta, a 5-10 senior point guard, shot 58% from the floor, including 41% from 3-point range, and 92% from the free-throw line.
ABBY LUSK, POCATELLO
The 6-1 sophomore forward frustrated opponents on both ends of the floor, leading the Thunder to the third-place trophy at state. She averaged 16.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 2.4 assists per game. She owns offers from Idaho State, Idaho and Weber State.
KARLIE BANKS, SANDPOINT
The co-MVP of the Inland Empire League had a three-game stretch this season where she scored 37, 37 and 33 points. The 5-11 senior wing averaged 18.5 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 1.3 assists and 1.0 blocks per game. Banks is considering a variety of offers to play at the next level.
