5A district track recap: .07 seconds separate Boise runners in two photo finishes
It wasn’t until an awards ceremony 30 minutes after their race that Sammy Smith and Allie Bruce found out who won.
The Boise High freshmen turned the girls 1,600-meter race into a photo finish at the 5A District Three track and field championships Friday at Centennial High. And they had the same problem in the 3,200 meters Thursday, too.
Smith ended up the victor in both races by mere hundredths of a second, winning the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 2.94 seconds and the 3,200 in 10:50.15. Bruce clocked times of 5:02.98 and 10:50.18.
A combined .07 seconds separated Smith from Bruce during the two races.
“I think both times what happened is we finished and I remember looking over at (Bruce) and then seeing (Bruce) looking over at me,” Smith said. “We knew it was that close.”
The freshmen also teamed up for a record-setting win in the girls 4x800 relay (9:13.99) as the Brave claimed the girls team championship at the district meet with 161.5 points. Rocky Mountain was second with 83 points, and Centennial was third with 78.5.
The track title comes on the heels of Boise’s 5A state championship in cross country in the fall, where Smith won the individual title and Bruce took third.
“It’s amazing, and they’re so coachable,” Boise distance coach Aaron Olswanger said. “They work hard together in practice, and neither of them like losing, which makes it difficult for races sometimes. Someone has to lose.”
In Friday’s 1,600, Smith leaned into the finish and took a tumble as she crossed the line. Bruce was the first there to help her up.
“There’s something about them,” Olswanger said. “They just bring the best out of each other.”
Both girls are still in junior high. Smith attends North Junior High and Bruce goes to Hillside. They’ve been racing head-to-head since the sixth grade, but this is the first year they’ve been on the same team.
“I just think it’s really fun to have someone to push myself with,” Bruce said.
Smith collected four golds at the district meet between the 3,200, 1,600, 4x800 and 4x400. Older sister Logan Smith, a junior, established a district meet record in the 800 meters with her time of 2:12.78. The previous record was 2:13.73 set by another Boise runner, Emily Hamlin, in 2014.
Boise senior Kayden Hulquist added victories in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles and a second-place showing in the long jump. Hulquist’s time of 45.28 in the 300 hurdles is the fastest in the state this season.
And the Brave’s championship haul would have been even bigger if not for disqualifications in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.
All of Boise’s varsity runners from their state championship cross country team also run track. The deep and talented group make Boise one of the favorites at next week’s state meet, which runs May 21-22 at Eagle High.
In the boys team competition, Rocky Mountain took first place with 137 points. Boise was second with 117 points, and Eagle was third with 95. The Grizzlies have won eight of the last nine boys state team championships.
Depth assured the Grizzlies the team title, as they took home just three individual wins. Senior Jarell Lucas swept the boys discus (169 feet, 5 inches) and shot put (54-10.25), while Nicholas Wong, Kade Thompson, Isaac Thayer and Brock Gary teamed up to win the boys 4x100 relay (42.82).
5A DISTRICT TRACK HIGHLIGHTS
- Borah senior Nathan Green set district meet records in the boys 3,200 (9:07.99) and 1,600 (4:13.85) and ran a leg on the Lions’ winning 4x800 relay team (8:01.84). The Washington signee has eight district titles in track dating back to his freshman year and is a three-time state champion in cross country.
- Boise senior Anders Covey finished first in the boys 110 hurdles (14.67) and 300 hurdles (39.49). His winning time in the 300 hurdles is the fastest in the state this season.
- Capital senior Megan Rose showcased her speed with victories in the girls 100 (12.34) and 200 meters (25.61). Rose is one of just two sprinters in Idaho to break the 12-second mark in the 100 this season.
- Mountain View’s boys 4x200 relay team comprised of Hunter Braseth, Anderson Kron, Osman Osman and Leyton Smithson clocked the top time in the state this season to win the district title (1:28.19) in the event. Smithson also won the boys 100 meters (10.97).
- In the final race of the meet, Boise’s Luke Ammirati, Porter Coffield, Mason Lawyer and Liam Murray placed first in the boys 4x400 with a state-leading time of 3:20.96. Murray and Lawyer also went 1-2, respectively, in the 400.
5A DISTRICT TENNIS
Eagle won the boys team title and Boise stood atop the girls standings Friday at the end of the 5A District Three tennis tournament.
Eagle’s boys doubles team of Kyle Garner and Shane Garner won a district title, leading the Mustangs to the team title. Eagle also received points from its mixed doubles championship team of Alec Tzeng and Riley Bobkiewicz.
Doubles pairs led the Boise girls to the team trophy too. The Brave took first and second in girls doubles as Tessa Staley and Lauren Gee topped teammates Anna Matthews and Sophie Copple for the title.
Centennial’s Tyler Dalos beat teammate Ryan Olson for the boys singles title, and Capital’s Gina Dudley edged Boise’s Ella Piron for the girls singles championship 7-6(5), 6-4.
