All Jonas Habig could do Tuesday was wait.

The Boise High senior shot a 1-under 70 at the 5A District Three Tournament at Boise Ranch Golf Course. But he never figured that score would hold up as the day’s best.

So Boise’s No. 3 golfer bided his time, watching the scores roll in and hoping for a possible playoff hole. But after stewing for 30 minutes, Habig didn’t need to do anything but pick up his district championship medal and pose for photos.

He finished two strokes ahead of Kuna’s Julien Harrington, making him the first from Boise to win a boys golf district title since Darren Fletcher in 1999.

“It was a relief,” Habig said. “Obviously, I played a good round and was hoping to win. I was kind of worried I needed to stay loose or stay warm if there was a playoff coming up.

“It was a little moment of relief, and obviously it was a good team effort. That made it even sweeter.”

His tournament-best score led Boise to the team title, its first since 2012. He had plenty of help as Boise shot 295 and took four of the top 10 spots. Will Strong (74) finished fourth, Lane Edwards (76) tied for fifth and Quinn Haigwood (76) tied for seventh.

“That’s the golf we do and should be playing,” Habig said. “We haven’t won every tournament this year. But state is coming up, and we’re turning on the jets at the right time.”

Habig’s district title may come as a surprise to some, as he spent all season as Boise’s No. 3 option. But not to Boise coach Jeff Ulrickson.

Habig wasn’t flashy, finishing the round with just two birdies. But he also had 15 pars, keeping him in control of the leaderboard.

“He’s always had it in him,” Ulrickson said. “I’ve seen him play like this numerous times, practice rounds and whatnot. Everything came together for him today.

“He was super consistent. He didn’t operate outside his normal zone. He just had a timely low round.”

While the district title puts him in the Boise record books, Habig said he has bigger goals in mind.

“It’s cool to be able to represent your school and yourself in a positive light,” he said. “Hopefully I can do that at state, too. That’s the history I’m really interested in.”

Eagle (304), Mountain View (314) and Timberline (320) also qualified for the state tournament May 17 to 18 at Avondale Golf Club in Coeur d’Alene.

Kuna’s Julien Harrington finished second with a 72 at the 5A District Three boys golf championship Tuesday at Boise Ranch Golf Course.
