Winners of the Treasure Valley athletes of the week (Feb. 24 to March 1)

Voting has closed for the latest Treasure Valley Athletes of the Week contest sponsored by Edmark Toyota.

Here are the winners, and you can read about all the candidates and their accomplishments below.

  • Wrestling: Cade White, Meridian
  • Boys basketball: Blake Thurston, Cascade

WRESTLING

Thomas Miracle, Borah: The senior upset a defending state champion and avenged one of his six losses this season with a 7-3 decision to win the 5A 126-pound state title.

Christopher Martino, Bishop Kelly: The sophomore won the 4A 106-pound state title, making him the first two-time state champion in the school’s 56-year history.

Hunter Bidelman, Caldwell: The freshman knocked off a two-time defending state champ to win the 4A 113-pound state title. He finished the year 54-4 with 41 wins via a pin.

Kyle Rice, New Plymouth: The sophomore won the 2A 120-pound state title, edging out a field that included three returning state champs, for his second championship.

Abe Turpen, Capital: The senior became the first wrestler in program history to win three state championships. He won the 5A 195-pound title for the third straight year with a pin in 1 minute, 11 seconds.

Hunter Mitchell, Kuna: The junior stayed on pace to win four state titles with his third championship. He won the 4A 120-pound division for his third championship, finishing the year 48-1 and helping the Kavemen repeat as team champs.

Cade White, Meridian: The freshman upset a defending state champ 11-10 in double overtime to win the 5A 120-pound championship, helping the Warriors finish third as a team.

Joey Madden, Eagle: The freshman won the first state title for the Mustang since 2012 with a 6-3 decision for the 5A 98-pound championship. Teammate Tanner Frothinger followed with the 113-pound title moments later.

Angel Rios, Columbia: The senior and Wildcats’ all-time leader in wins (185) capped his career with the 4A 152-pound championship. He had finished second each of the past two years.

Dedrick Navarro, Nampa: He won the first state title for a Nampa freshman since 2011 with a 9-4 decision in the 4A 98-pound finals.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Cooper Lumsden, Timberline: The junior racked up 24 points and four rebounds to lead the Wolves to an upset win over Madison in a state play-in game, punching their ticket to the 5A state tournament.

Blake Thurston, Cascade: The junior scored 28 points and then 25 points in a pair of elimination games to lead the Ramblers to the 1A Division II state tournament. He shot 57 percent from the floor and had 10 rebounds and 10 steals in those two games.

Townsend Tripple, Rocky Mountain: The senior racked up 16 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks to lead the Grizzlies to a 50-38 win over Borah in the 5A District Three championship game.

Tyler Robinett, Middleton: The senior had a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Vikings to the 4A District Three title with a 65-54 win over Kuna.

Tanner Hayhurst, Eagle: The senior scored 24 points on 10-for-14 shooting in a 68-46 win over Timberline that clinched the Mustangs a spot at the 5A state tournament.

Jaxon Dines, Homedale: The freshman drained 5-of-8 3-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Trojans to a 61-60 upset win over Fruitland for the 3A District Three title. The win snapped No. 1-ranked Fruitland’s 16-game winning streak.
