Kuna rallies for more history, and 21 Valley wrestlers win titles at state wrestling
Kuna repeated as the 4A team champions and 21 Treasure Valley wrestlers climbed to the top of the podium at the state tournament Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center.
Here were the top highlights from the championship weekend.
KUNA GOES BACK-TO-BACK
Kuna entered Saturday in a rare position — looking up in the team standings.
Kavemen coach Pat Owens wasn’t sure how his team would handle the new situation. But Kuna rallied on Saturday to continue their history-making season.
The Kavemen rode three individual champions and nine placers to rack up 206 points, topping conference rival Columbia by 17.5 points for the first back-to-back state championship in program history.
“I was proud of them,” Pat Owens said. “It’s good to see they were pretty resilient to come back and edge it out.”
Hunter Mitchell (120 pounds), Dante Roggio (138) and Preston Owens (145) won their weight classes. All three are juniors, but all three took different paths to a state title.
Mitchell (48-1) continued his dominance, rolling to his third state title in three seasons. He’ll have a chance to join Michael Cook (2011-14) as the only four-time state champ in program history next year.
Roggio (48-1) finally took home a first-place medal after finishing second each of the past two seasons. He was tied 2-2 with Century’s Canyon Mansfield late in the third period before rallying for a 6-2 decision.
And Preston Owens (47-2), the coach’s son, broke through for his first title, pinning his way to the finals before scoring a decisive 9-3 victory.
The three state champions, and runner-up Gavin Heindel (285), allowed the Kavemen to dominate the final round. But Kuna’s depth ensured the powerhouse program earned another banner.
Three junior varsity wrestlers finished inside the top six. They were Anieas Rivera (third, 120), John Kallmeyer (third, 145) and Matthew Allison (fifth, 138). That depth allowed Kuna to win every meet it entered this season, including their first Rollie Lane title in January.
“To do what this group has done this year and kind of just take it to another level for Kuna, I couldn’t be happier for them,” Pat Owens said.
POST FALLS EEKS OUT 5A TITLE
The loudest cheers of the night might have come from the Post Falls fans as they watched Capital’s Charley Hastriter rally for the 220-pound title over Highland’s Logan George.
Hastriter’s title denied Highland four points, just enough to allow Post Falls to hang on for its third straight state title and fifth in the past six years.
The Trojans finished with 213 points, four points ahead of upset-minded Highland.
Senior A.J. De la Rosa (145), a three-time state champ, and Ethan Miller (152) led 10 Post Falls placers with individual titles. Highland had 11 placers but no state champs.
RIRIE COMPLETES SIX-PEAT
The most impressive team performance came at the 2A level, which saw Ririe win its sixth consecutive title behind two champions and 13 placers.
The Bulldogs racked up 245 points to top second-place New Plymouth by 46 points. Their six state titles tie an all-classification record set by Teton (1968-73). And Ririe will only graduate three of its 13 placers.
TURPEN WINS THIRD TITLE
Capital senior Abe Turpen (33-5) became the first wrestler in program history to win his third state championship. And he didn’t need much time, pinning Rocky Mountain’s Bronson Staley in 1 minute, 11 seconds for the 5A 195-pound title.
Turpen won the previous two state championships at 195 as an underdog. But he entered as the top seed this year and performed like one, pinning his first two opponents in 46 seconds or less.
Turpen set his sights on making history at Capital after winning his first title as a sophomore.
“That’s what motivates me,” Turpen said of his goal. “That’s what gets me through all the tough practices. That’s what separates me from my competition.”
Turpen won’t wrestle in college, instead opting to play rugby at Arizona. But Capital coach Elliot Zander said he left a lasting impression on the Eagles’ wrestling program.
“Our (182)-pounder placed today, and our 220-pounder was a state champion as well,” Zander said. “Everybody that’s around him in the room also gets a little better. I think that’s a good representation of his attitude and his effort.”
UPSET LEADS MERIDIAN TO THIRD PLACE
Three Warriors won individual titles to lead Meridian to its best finish in four years. But none were a bigger surprise than freshman Cade White (32-6).
The second seed at 120 pounds knocked off Thunder Ridge’s Kaden Ramos (52-3), a defending state champ, 11-10 in double overtime after a wild, back-and-forth match.
White jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first period, but Ramos cut the deficit to 7-6 by the end of the period. White failed to win the match in regulation after a stalling call awarded Ramos one point to force overtime. But the freshman kept his composure, scoring an escape in the third extra period for the title.
“I’m in disbelief right now,” White said after the match. “It’s awesome. It’s been one of my dreams ever since I was younger, and it finally came through.”
Senior Breyden Morrill avenged a loss to Post Falls’ Isaac Jessen in last year’s final for the 132-pound crown. And junior Kaleb Smith scored a 17-8 major decision over Lake City’s Seth Nutting for the 170 title as Meridian followed its first district title since 1999 with hardware from the state tournament.
RARE EAGLE CHAMPIONS
No Eagle wrestler had won a state title since Brig Stelle (170) in 2012. But the Mustangs scored a pair of championship victories early Saturday.
Freshman Joey Madden (31-6) won the 98-pound title with a 6-3 decision. And freshman Tanner Frothinger (44-5) followed with the 113-pound crown after a 4-2 decision.
COLUMBIA’S RIOS BACK ON TOP
Columbia’s Angel Rios won a state title as a freshman, setting up expectations of four state championships.
A one-point loss in the finals two years ago and a two-point loss in last year’s finals derailed any chances of that. But the 152-pounder bounced back from those heartbreaking defeats Saturday to run away with a 12-4 decision over Middleton’s Kyle Austin for the 4A championship.
“Those two losses, I think they are probably the hardest I’ve felt pain in so long,” Rios said. “It just sucks because I thought I was gonna be a four-timer. But losing those close ones made me want to get this one even more.”
Rios (50-2) leaves Columbia as the program’s all-time leader in wins at 185.
MARTINO MAKES HISTORY AT BK
No Bishop Kelly wrestler had won two state titles in the school’s 56-year history. Until now.
Sophomore Christopher Martino (40-2) avenged one of his two losses this season with the 4A 106-pound title. He jumped out to a 5-1 lead over Nampa’s Simon Alberto Luna in the first period and cruised to a 10-2 decision.
“We haven’t been known as a wrestling program until now,” Bishop Kelly coach Manny Ybarra said. “And it all starts with him.”
The two-time former youth national champ chose to attend a school with little to no wrestling pedigree. But he said his relationship with Ybarra and the school’s academics convinced him the Knights were the program for him.
And now he’s making Bishop Kelly relevant at the state level for the first time in a long time.
“We’re building a program,” Martino said. “We’ve had a couple state placers the last two years. So hopefully we can keep building and we can become a top-five or top-three program in the state within a couple years.”
NAMPA FRESHMAN EYEING FOUR TITLES
After a breakout freshman season, Dedrick Navarro has already set his sights on bigger and better things.
Navarro (47-2) won the 4A 98-pound division with a 9-4 decision over Columbia’s Payton Hernandez. That made him the first Nampa freshman to win state since 2011, and it sets him up to become the first three- or four-time state champ in program history.
Those are goals he’s already set. And Navarro, the son of an Oregon State wrestler, also has his eyes on a Division I future.
“I want to go to Arizona State,” Navarro said. “I’ve got to be able to win all these state titles in order to go there and show my skills.”
MORE MEDALS FOR WRESTLING ROYALTY
New Plymouth sophomore Kyle Rice (2A 120) and Coeur d’Alene sophomore Gunner Giulio (5A 160) kept pace with their family legacy by clinching their second state titles.
Rice is halfway to matching his older brother Joe Rice, who won four state titles for the Pilgrims from 2015-18. But Rice can claim bragging rights as the program’s single-season leader in wins after a 49-2 season.
Giulio follows in the footsteps of his older brothers VJ and Boone Giulio, who both starred at American Falls. VJ won four titles from 2008-11, and Boone won three from 2015-18.
FRUITLAND CHAMPIONSHIP STREAK ALIVE
Freshman Ezra Clemens (47-6) ensured at least one Fruitland wrestler won a state title for the 10th straight year. He pinned South Fremont’s Ryker Simmons in 23 seconds to win the 98-pound division, and none of his matches lasted longer than 1:12.
He was the only local champion in the 3A classification, which saw South Fremont win the team title.
HOBBS COMPLETES FOUR-PEAT
South Fremont’s Sawyer Hobbs became Idaho’s 29th four-time state champion with the 3A 195-pound title. Hobbs (54-0) pinned Weiser sophomore Rylee Willet in 1:16 for the championship, his longest match of the weekend.
GIRLS AT THE STATE TOURNAMENT
A record 13 girls qualified for the state tournament, which has yet to start a separate girls division like 22 states across the country. None made it onto the podium, leaving just two females in Idaho history to place at the state meet.
Clearwater Valley senior Fallon Wilkins, who has signed with Corban University, came the closest this year, falling one victory short of reaching the podium in the 2A 106-pound division. She was the only female to make it to the second day of the tournament.
TOP GIRL INJURED BY BOY
Moscow freshman Skyla Zimmerman entered the weekend as the top threat for a girl to place. But the fourth seed in 4A’s 98-pound bracket saw her tournament end Friday when she injured her right knee in a consolation match.
Zimmerman was trailing 9-0 in the third period when her male opponent threw her to the mat. Her leg got caught underneath her, forcing it to twist as she slammed to the mat.
Moscow coach Pat Amos said the initial diagnosis Friday was a strained hamstring, but trainers struggled to examine her knee Friday until the pain subsided. Amos said Zimmerman (30-9) would get re-evaluated after the state tournament.
Amos would like to see a separate girls state tournament but said the move was a clean one.
“I told both the coach and the kid, that’s part of the sport,” Amos said. “She knows the risks. She’s out there scraping just like everyone else. It’s unfortunate she got her leg caught and twisted.”
