Boise State clears hurdle for stadium renovation, part of plan to upgrade facilities
Boise State got approval from the Idaho State Board of Education last week to begin reviewing design proposals and select a construction firm for the expansion of the north end of Albertsons Stadium.
The project includes adding premium seating, including loge boxes and field-level suites. It also includes the addition of general admission seats and the construction of a dining hall, which will serve all of Boise State’s teams.
The expansion is expected to cost between $32 million-$40 million, according to documents from the State Board.
Boise State Athletic Director Jeramiah Dickey didn’t put a timetable on the start of construction Saturday, but he said it was a big deal to get board approval.
“This was a massive next step for us,” Dickey told KTVB before the game against Colorado State.
Expanding the north end of the stadium is part of Boise State’s ambitious plan to upgrade just about all of its athletic facilities, creating an athletic village on campus. The vision, coined the “Playbook for Success,” also includes upgrades to ExtraMile Arena, and the construction of a soccer stadium and a 5,000-seat arena on campus, among other projects.
In all, the project is expected to cost more than $300 million, the university announced in August.
Dickey also offered an update Saturday on the installation of the Broncos’ new video board in the south end of the stadium. The 6,000-square-foot board, being funded by a $4.5-million donation from East Idaho company Melaleuca, is expected to be in place in time for the Potato Bowl, which is scheduled for Dec. 22.
The video board was originally expected to be installed in time for Boise State’s home game against BYU next week, but Dickey said shortages on materials made that impossible.
