Boise State shares price tag on athletic village plan. It’s hefty. Here’s the breakdown
Boise State estimates that the sweeping facilities upgrades detailed in its “Playbook for Success” will cost more than $300 million, the university announced Thursday.
Boise State shared its vision for an athletics village in April. The plan included major upgrades to Albertsons Stadium, ExtraMile Arena and the Arguinchona Basketball Complex, as well as the construction of a soccer stadium, beach volleyball courts, a 5,000-seat arena and a new indoor tennis facility on campus.
“While unprecedented and bold, we are unwavering in our vision to create elite facilities and experiences for our student-athletes and Bronco Nation,” Boise State Athletic Director Jeramiah Dickey said in a statement. “Our aggressive fundraising strategy is already well underway and we aim to announce progress by the end of this year.”
No specific date for the start of construction was shared on Thursday, but members of Dickey’s staff have been fundraising for the project.
Boise State has received four gifts of at least $1 million in the past year, and $1.25 million has been raised for planned upgrades to ExtraMile Arena and the Arguinchona complex, according to the university.
Cost analysis of the entire project is based on current market conditions and is subject to change, the school said. The total cost also includes deferred maintenance projections and other miscellaneous projects.
The bulk of expenses from the project revolve around football: upgrades to Albertsons Stadium and facilities. Renovations to the stadium and the Varsity Center would cost $129.4 million, the estimates show. Those upgrades include offices for football coaches and staff, and also training and nutrition space.
About $81 million will be dedicated to renovating the north and east sides of the stadium, including the addition of more loge boxes and premium seating. Another $48.3 million will be dedicated to upgrading the Varsity Center.
Upgrades to the Bleymaier Football Center and relocation of the Broncos’ outdoor practice field would cost about $6 million.
Boise State also shared more details Thursday about its plans for the north end zone at the stadium — expected to cost $36.1 million. Those renovations will connect the concourse all the way around, and add more premium seating options, 10 field-level suites and a field-level club. The club also will also serve as a new tunnel that the team will run out of on game day.
Upgrades to ExtraMile Arena and the Arguinchona complex are set to cost $19.4 million. Those include changes to training facilities, including a major face-lift for the practice gym, as well as premium seating in the arena, new offices for coaches and a state-of-the-art weight room.
Boise State has prioritized many facets of the upgrades to the football and basketball facilities, focusing first on the installation of more premium seating in ExtraMile and Albertsons. Their attention then will turn to planned renovations to the east side of Albertsons Stadium, including expanded concessions areas and renovated restrooms.
Planned upgrades to the basketball training facilities are also high on the list, a spokesperson for the university said Thursday.
Included in Thursday’s announcement was more information on upgraded seating options in ExtraMile Arena, including an event-level club space and a mezzanine-level club space in the north end of the arena. That portion of the project is expected to cost $13.9 million, while the upgrades to the training facilities in Arguinchona are tagged at $5.5 million.
Construction of Boise State’s new 5,000-seat Olympic sports arena is expected to cost $100.3 million, and construction of a soccer stadium would come in at about $14.2 million, the school said in its release.
A new six-court indoor tennis complex has a price tag of $19.3 million, and construction of beach volleyball courts $1.4 million.
Renovations to Boise State’s off-campus track, cross country and softball facilities at Dona Larsen Park come in at $6.5 million. Those include dedicated training spaces for the track and cross country teams, indoor batting cages for the softball team, installation of turf on the softball diamond, and new lighting and video-board options.
