Will Boise area see snow? Here’s when rain showers, snowfall are likely

Boise recently got some short-lived relief from dry winter weather conditions.

Monday, Feb. 9, brought rain showers and “trace” amounts of snow to the Boise area, according to Korri Anderson, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

Anderson told the Idaho Statesman that Monday’s rain was brought in by a cold front moving in from the North West.

As of Tuesday, Feb. 10, less than half an inch of precipitation had fallen so far in the week, the weather service said.

What’s in the weather forecast for Boise?

The National Weather Service’s latest forecast for Boise indicates more precipitation could be on the way to the Treasure Valley.

Boise was expected to be partly sunny on Tuesday with a high temperature near 51 degrees and an overnight low degree of 35 degrees.

There was a 20% chance of rain after 11 p.m. Tuesday, according to the weather service.

The forecast called for a 30% chance of rain on Wednesday mainly before 11 a.m. The high will near 48, and the low will be around 33.

“There’s a low-pressure system off the coast by the Bay Area, and that’s going to bring a band of precipitation to the area late (Tuesday) evening,” Anderson said. “It’s going to come up from Nevada and move over the border into our area late this evening into Wednesday morning.”

The low-pressure system will move up through most of Idaho on Tuesday and Wednesday before heading out of the state, the forecaster said.

Will Boise get snow? What about the mountains?

Anderson said the Boise area should see less than half an inch of rainfall, with trace amounts of snow possible.

However, snow was more likely in the mountains, according to Anderson.

The Sawtooth range and Boise’s Bogus Basin could receive a quarter-inch to 6 inches of fresh snowfall at elevations of 5,000 feet or higher.

How long will rain last?

According to the National Weather Service, the system moving into the Great Basin will “give way to more valley rain and light mountain snow” across central and south Idaho through Wednesday afternoon.

Boise will see a “brief dry break” in the weather on Thursday, Feb. 12, and Friday, Feb. 23, before precipitation chances return over the weekend, the weather service said in its Idaho state forecast discussion.

In Boise, Thursday will be “mostly sunny” with “areas of fog” before 8 a.m., according to the National Weather Service’s latest forecast. The high will be near 51, and the overnight low will be around 31.

More sunshine is expected Friday, when the high will near 52 and the low will drop to 35.

Showers may start in Boise on Saturday when there’s a 20% chance of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service’s latest forecast.

Chances of rain increase to 30% overnight Saturday and peak at 40% on Sunday.

Highs on Saturday and Sunday will be in the low 50s, while lows will hover around 35.

According to the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center forecast for Monday, Feb. 15 through Thursday, Feb. 19, above-normal precipitation is likely to continue into next week.
