Boise airport broke another passenger record in 2025. See reasons behind growth

The Boise airport is on a record-breaking streak.

In 2025, more than 5 million passengers traveled through Boise Airport, setting a new travel record, airport officials said in a Jan. 23 news release.

Eight airlines offer direct flights from Boise to 27 destinations across the United States, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles.

The new travel record comes as the airport is celebrating a century of air travel.

Boise Airport’s year-long BOI 100 celebration will start with a public ceremony in April, and includes the opening of an airport history exhibit and Family Day in June.

“We’re excited to celebrate this incredible milestone that really highlights the service we provide to the region,” Boise Airport director Rebecca Hupp said in the release.

How many passengers did Boise Airport see in 2025?

About 5.2 million passengers traveled through Boise Airport in 2025, according to the release.

That’s an increase of nearly 5% from 2024, when more than 4.9 million travelers flew in or out of Idaho’s biggest commercial airport.

Over the past decade, passenger traffic through Boise Airport has increased nearly 76%, airport officials said.

“Boise Airport has set passenger records for four consecutive years,” Shawna Samuelson, the airport’s air service and marketing manager, told the Idaho Statesman.

To keep up with growing passenger numbers, the Boise airport has added two new destinations.

In January, Alaska Airlines started direct flights from Boise to Ontario, California, the Statesman previously reported.

In June, Alaska Airlines will begin offering nonstop flights to Anchorage, Alaska, according to earlier Statesman reporting.

Why are more people traveling through Boise airport?

“Much of the increased demand for air service can be attributed to the Treasure Valley’s rapid population growth, which has driven strong demand for both business and leisure travel,” Samuelson told the Statesman in an email.

Boise ranked second on LinkedIn’s 2025 list of Cities on the Rise, highlighting 25 mid-sized U.S. metropolitan areas where hiring is growing, job postings are on the rise and more professionals are choosing to move, the Statesman previously reported.

Idaho had the second-largest percentage growth rate in the nation — 1.4% — from 2024 to 2025, according to a Tuesday, Jan. 27, news release from the U.S. Census Bureau.

From 2024 to 2025, Idaho’s population increased by almost 30,000 people, resulting in a total population of about 2 million people.

According to Samuelson, the Boise airport has kept up with population demands by expanding “key infrastructure” such as the rental car center, parking garages, retail stores, restrooms and food and beverage options.

“Looking ahead, construction of Concourse A will add new gates and larger hold rooms that are right-sized for the larger aircraft airlines are utilizing to serve our growing passenger base,” Samuelson said.

Designs for Concourse A, postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic, were estimated to be finished in 2027 with construction beginning in 2028, the Statesman previously reported.

How does Boise compare to other airports in the West?

Boise Airport reported more passengers in 2025 than some of its regional rivals.

In 2025, Reno-Tahoe International Airport in Nevada saw 4.9 million passengers, according to a Wednesday, Jan. 14, news release.

Kenmore Air International Airport in Port Angeles, Washington, flies more than 90,000 passengers annually in “its iconic de Havilland Beaver and Otter aircraft,” the seaplane base said a September news release.

However, Boise Airport couldn’t compete with larger airports nearby in terms of passenger traffic.

According to annual reports, Portland International Airport in Oregon had more than 17 million passengers in 2025.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport served more than 52 million passengers in 2024 “with a forecast to grow further in 2025,” airport officials said.
