Idaho 16 construction brings more closures to busy Meridian road. Where? When?
A busy section of Ustick Road in Meridian is set to close nightly on Wednesday, Feb. 4, and Thursday, Feb. 5, as work progresses on the Idaho 16 extension.
The road will close between Owyhee Storm Avenue and the McDermott Road bypass from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. both nights while crews construct a new interchange bridge, according to the Idaho Transportation Department.
The bridge will allow drivers on the new freeway to travel quickly over Ustick, with new on- and off-ramps for entering and exiting the freeway.
On Wednesday and Thursday nights, crews with ITD plan to install girders, the large, horizontal beams that support the bridge, meaning drivers will see the skeleton of the bridge taking shape.
According to ITD, traffic will be detoured north to McMillan Road and south to Cherry Lane during the construction, while access to homes within the closure area will remain.
In a statement included in the department’s news release on Monday, ITD Engineer Dan Gorley called the work a “major milestone” in the Idaho 16 extension.
Once complete, the Ustick Road interchange will include two lanes in each direction with a shoulder and sidewalk on each side in a “tight diamond design,” according to an ITD project page. There will also be two left-turn lanes in both directions on Ustick.
The interchange is expected to open in 2027, along with the entire Idaho 16 corridor spanning from Idaho 44, or State Street, to Interstate 84.
In recent weeks, crews have begun installing girders for the interchange at Idaho 16 and I-84, and according to ITD spokesperson Jill Youmans, additional interchange construction and closures should be expected through February and March.
