Update: Boise police provide new details on why officer shot suspect after traffic stop
A Boise police officer shot a suspect who fled from a traffic stop into a North Boise neighborhood on Wednesday.
At about 3 p.m., a Boise police officer stopped a vehicle near South Division Avenue and West Howe Street, according to the department.
A passenger inside the vehicle provided false information to police before pulling out a knife and fleeing on foot into a nearby neighborhood, the Boise Police Department said in a news release.
“BPD quickly set up a perimeter, deployed drones, and began searching for the suspect,” police said.
Police said an officer found him on South Colorado Avenue and tried to approach him, but the suspect “refused to follow commands to get on the ground.”
“The suspect charged at the officer with the knife,” the release said. “One Boise police officer fired his duty weapon, striking the suspect.”
Ada County Paramedics transported the injured suspect to a local hospital for treatment, according to police. Boise Police spokesperson Haley Williams confirmed that he was still in the hospital as of Thursday afternoon.
No one else was injured during the incident. Police said the other people in the vehicle remained at the traffic stop.
The Garden City Police Department will lead the the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force’s investigation into the shooting.
The Boise Police Department was been involved in five shootings this year, three of which were fatal, according to a database maintained by the Idaho Statesman. Most recently, Boise police fatally shot 47-year-old Guadalupe Reyes on Nov. 10 after they responded to a report of “suspicious circumstances,” a news release said.
Last year, there were 11 police shootings in the Treasure Valley, according to the Statesman database. Boise police were involved in six of those shootings.
