Suspect is shot by police, dies at hospital after a hostage situation in a Boise home
A person was shot and killed by a Boise officer following a hostage situation on Sunday, police said.
At 2:35 p.m., officers responded to a home on the 1300 block of North Liberty in West Boise, the Boise Police Department said in a news release.
Police said a third party reported “concerning behavior and a possible hostage situation” in which a man armed with a knife was threatening another man inside the home.
“Officers began an investigation and worked to make contact with the suspect in the residence,” police said.
The department called in its crisis-negotiation team and the special-operations unit to help.
“Around 5:05 p.m., the victim safely exited the residence and, as officers moved in to assist the victim, the suspect also emerged armed with a knife,” police said in the release.
An officer then fired at and hit the suspect, according to police.
First responders transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
The Ada County Coroner’s Office will identify him once his family has been notified.
Police said the hostage victim was treated for minor injuries at the scene. No officers were injured.
Boise police spokesperson Haley Williams told the Idaho Statesman that the details about what happened between the two men before police arrived are still under investigation.
The department said it will follow policy by placing the officer involved on leave.
The Ada County Sheriff’s Office will lead the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force in investigating the police shooting.
