Coroner releases name of Boise man killed by police after knife threat, hostage situation
Officials released the name of the man who died in a police shooting after a hostage negotiation Sunday.
An officer fatally shot a suspect after a third party reported “concerning behavior and a possible hostage situation” in which a man armed with a knife was threatening another man inside an apartment on the 1300 block of North Liberty in West Boise, Boise police said in a news release.
The Ada County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the suspect as 47-year-old Guadalupe Reyes, of Boise.
Police said in a Wednesday update that Reyes and the hostage victim knew each other. Reyes was temporarily staying in the apartment owned by the hostage victim’s neighbor, according to police.
Detectives are continuing to investigate what happened between the men inside the apartment, but police said the hostage victim “was unable to leave the apartment.”
The Police Department called in its crisis-negotiation team, as well as a special-operations unit, and attempted to negotiate with the suspect for more than two hours.
“Around 5:05 p.m., the victim safely exited the residence and, as officers moved in to assist the victim, the suspect also emerged armed with a knife,” police said in the release.
An officer then fired his gun, hitting the suspect, according to police. Boise police identified the officer Wednesday as Brady Strodtbeck, who has been with the agency for four years. He was placed on paid administrative leave per departmental policy.
First responders took the suspect to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, where he was pronounced dead at 5:26 p.m. in the emergency department following unsuccessful life-saving measures, the Coroner’s Office said.
The coroner listed Reyes’ cause of death as “multiple gunshot wounds” and his manner of death as homicide.
Police said the hostage victim was treated for minor injuries at the scene. No officers were injured.
The Ada County Sheriff’s Office will lead the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force in investigating the police shooting.
