Idaho woman sentenced to prison after 2019 DUI crash in Boise that killed 3-year-old

A Boise woman will spend the next several years in prison after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of drugs in a fatal 2019 crash.

Anna Mihelich, 54, could serve up to 30 years but will be eligible for parole after seven, according to a news release from the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office.

Mihelich pleaded guilty in July to two felony counts of aggravated DUI, and in return two other counts of the same charge were dropped, according to online court records. She was sentenced on Thursday afternoon.

She was arrested last October, months after a July 2, 2019, car crash that killed a 3-year-old girl in Boise. Police say Mihelich was driving an SUV on Orchard Street when her car collided head-on with a van that was carrying a mother and three children.

All four people in the van were injured during the crash, and one of the children, Odalys Martinez Chavez, died on July 8, 2019.

Mihelich was charged last September and arrested on Oct. 1. The news release from the prosecutor said Mihelich had drugs in her system at the time of the crash, though it is not stated what the substance was.

“I give my condolences to the family, and I also appreciate their strength during this case,” Jan M. Bennetts, Ada County prosecutor, said in the news release. “Thank you to the Boise Police Department for their thorough investigation in this crash.”

As of Friday morning, Mihelich was still in the Ada County Jail. She will be transferred to the Idaho Department of Correction to serve her prison term.
