New York man charged in connection with August shooting death of Boise State student
A man allegedly responsible for the death of a Boise State University hockey player last August has been charged.
Kyle Kelly, 21, was booked into the Ada County Jail on Wednesday after he was charged with one felony count of involuntary manslaughter, according to a news release from the Boise Police Department.
Kelly was charged in the death of 22-year-old Robert “Bobby” Skinner, who police say died from an unintentional gunshot wound last Aug. 23.
At around 2:45 a.m. that day, police were called to a house on the 900 block of West Belmont Street, and officers arrived to find Skinner with a “life-threatening gunshot wound,” according to the BPD news release.
Despite their efforts, Skinner died at the scene. Police later said that the gunshot wound was not self-inflicted, but the shooting was thought to be unintentional.
Skinner, a student from Seattle, was a member of the Boise State Hockey Club, and he was last listed as a junior on the club’s roster.
After Skinner’s death, the case was sent to the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office for review, and it came back with charges.
Court records show that a criminal complaint was filed against Kelly on July 7 and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Kelly, a resident of Hampton Bays, New York, turned himself into police on Wednesday, according to BPD.
Kelly appeared via video for an arraignment hearing Thursday afternoon, according to court records. His bond was set at $150,000, according to a news release from the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office.
His next court appearance is set for Aug. 11 in front of 4th District Judge Adam Kimball.
