Idaho County’s coronavirus caseload doubles; 6 deaths added, over 400 new cases statewide

Idaho County saw the largest leap in coronavirus cases on Monday, reporting 90, and the state saw a spike it has not seen in nearly three weeks.

Idaho County’s total is now 175 cases, up from 85 on Sunday, according to Idaho North Central District. The rapid increase was partly the result of an outbreak at an Idaho County prison. The Idaho Department of Correction said Monday that on Sept. 16, the prison tested everyone who lives and works at the North Idaho Correctional Institution. The prison can hold more than 400 men, not including staff.

Of those tested, 88 inmates and three staff members were positive, IDOC spokesman Jeff Ray said.

With 423 new cases reported Monday, Idaho now stands at 34,926 total. The state had seen more than 300 cases just once in the past 17 days, and that came last Friday. Some districts don’t report cases on Sundays, which can lead to bigger numbers on Mondays.

A Clearwater County state prison also accounted for a couple of Idaho County’s new cases. On Sept. 17, IDOC tested all staff and inmates at Idaho Correctional Institution-Orofino, and one inmate and one staffer tested positive. The men’s prison can hold up to 580 men, not including staff.

In total Monday, Clearwater County reported four new cases, for a total of 32.

There were six new deaths from COVID-19 reported Monday, bringing the statewide death toll to 447. Custer County reported its first COVID-19 death, a woman older than 90, according to Eastern Idaho Public Health.

Bear Lake County also reported its first COVID-19 death, a man in his 80s, according to Southeastern Idaho Public Health. Washington County reported a new death, bringing its toll to five people.

Ada County reported a new COVID-19 death as well, bringing the county death toll to 145 people. Kootenai County reported two new COVID-19 deaths (35 total).

Ada County saw 56 new cases on Monday, bringing its total to 11,394 cases, according to Health and Welfare. That brings the seven-day average for Ada County to 46.6 — a 35% increase in the past week.
