Idaho adds more than 350 confirmed COVID cases for first time in more than two weeks

For the first time since Sept. 1, Idaho has reported more than 350 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in a single day.

The state’s seven public health districts announced a combined 368 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus statewide on Friday after going 14 consecutive days with less than 300 cases per day.

Idaho’s seven-day moving average of confirmed and probable cases was down to 233.9 on Sept. 9, but it has since climbed to 281.3 as of Friday.

There were also four new deaths from COVID-19 reported between Ada, Bonneville, Canyon and Nez Perce counties. Idaho has lost 439 residents to the virus with a case fatality rate of about 1.18%. According to updated demographics from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, the latest deaths were all individuals 70 or older. The Bonneville County death was a male in his 90s, according to Eastern Idaho Public Health.

Ada County added 72 new confirmed cases to increase its state-leading total to 11,278 cases, according to Boise-based Central District Health. But it was Eastern Idaho Public Health that reported the largest increase of any district with 109 new cases, including 65 in Bonneville County (1,967 total).

Eight other counties also saw increases of 10 more cases — Kootenai (37 new, 2,432 total), Canyon (26 new, 7,386 total), Twin Falls (19 new, 1,790 total), Bingham (19 new, 788 total), Madison (18 new, 356 total), Jefferson (17 new, 390 total), Bannock (12 new, 866 total) and Latah (11 new, 297 total).

The remaining counties reporting new confirmed cases on Friday were Benewah (3 new, 136 total), Blaine (4 new, 601 total), Bonner (8 new, 265 total), Camas (2 new, 15 total), Caribou (3 new, 81 total), Cassia (5 new, 571 total), Clark (2 new, 26 total), Custer (1 new, 46 total), Elmore (1 new, 253 total), Fremont (5 new, 136 total), Gem (1 new, 243 total), Gooding (2 new, 222 total), Idaho (1 new, 84 total), Jerome (7 new, 632 total), Lincoln (1 new, 68 total), Minidoka (8 new, 576 total), Oneida (1 new, 20 total), Payette (7 new, 710 total), Power (6 new, 195 total), Shoshone (1 new, 210 total), Teton (1 new, 126 total) and Washington (2 new, 307 total).

Since the start of the pandemic, 34,171 Idahoans have tested positive for the coronavirus. Health and Welfare reported 3,058 “probable” cases (58 new). IDHW estimates that of those infected, 19,915 people are presumed recovered.

Long-term care update

Health and Welfare released its weekly update on COVID-19 in long-term care facilities Friday.

Outbreaks at Idaho facilities increased by four to 166 overall, total individual cases jumped by 127 to 2,424 cases, and deaths rose by 16 to 243, with four new facilities recording a death.

Active cases decreased slightly to 1,622 at 76 facilities — down from 1,629 at 77 facilities last week. There are 90 facilities with resolved outbreaks.

Overall hospitalizations: Health and Welfare reports that there have been 1,701 hospitalizations of people with COVID-19, 441 admissions to the ICU and 2,542 health care workers infected. Hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.

St. Luke’s Health System: As of Sept. 17, the health system was reporting 32 patients in its hospitals with confirmed COVID-19 out of 426 patients overall. The health system reported a 14-day coronavirus test positivity rate of 7%.

Saint Alphonsus Health System: As of Sept. 17, the health system was reporting 25 patients in its hospitals with confirmed COVID-19 out of 382 patients overall. The health system reported a 14-day coronavirus test positivity rate of 9.4%.

Boise School District: The district says the following schools have reported confirmed COVID-19 cases among students or staff since Aug. 17: Adams Elementary (2 cases), Boise Online School (1), Borah High (4), Hillcrest Elementary (1), Maple Grove Elementary (2), Roosevelt Elementary (1), South Junior High (1), West Junior High (1).

Testing totals: At the end of the day Friday, Health and Welfare reported that 285,137 people had been tested statewide. About 12% of those have been positive for COVID-19.
