Which Idaho counties are being hit hardest by the coronavirus? Here’s the list.

Idaho’s recent surge in coronavirus infections has hit the Treasure Valley hard — and not just in Ada County.

Over the past two weeks (through July 27), the county with the most new confirmed coronavirus cases per capita is Canyon County. Ada is fourth.

Blaine County still leads the state in per-capita cases since the COVID-19 pandemic began, with Canyon second and Ada seventh.

Here are the counties that lead the state in per-capita infections reported over the past 14 days (they are ranked by cases per 1,000 residents; in parentheses is the number of confirmed cases reported in the past 14 days):

1. Canyon: 8.87 (2,038 cases)

2. Owyhee: 8.12 (96)

3. Minidoka: 5.85 (123)

4. Ada: 5.30 (2,551)

5. Cassia: 4.04 (97)

6. Payette: 4.01 (96)

7. Shoshone: 3.57 (46)

8. Washington: 3.53 (36)

9. Kootenai: 3.49 (578)

10. Gem: 3.31 (60)

Other counties with at least 50 new cases:

11. Bannock: 2.98 (262)

12. Twin Falls: 2.60 (226)

13. Jerome: 2.54 (62)

16. Bonneville: 2.02 (240)

19. Jefferson: 1.71 (51)

21. Bingham: 1.41 (66)

28. Bonner: 1.09 (50)

Blaine County, which is tops in per-capita cases since the pandemic began, is 37th in the past two weeks with just 11 new cases (0.48 per 1,000 residents).

Here are the top 10 overall (per 1,000 residents), a list dominated by rural counties:

1. Blaine: 23.8 (548 cases)

2. Canyon: 17.9 (4,124)

3. Minidoka: 17.4 (366)

4. Cassia: 16.1 (388)

5. Washington: 15.5 (158)

6. Owyhee: 15.2 (180)

7. Ada: 14.0 (6,763)

8. Jerome: 13.8 (338)

9. Twin Falls: 11.2 (971)

10. Payette: 11.1 (265)

As far as trends in Ada and Canyon counties, here’s where we stand:

Ada County’s 14-day average of new confirmed cases peaked July 18 at 209.8. It was 182.2 through July 27, falling seven of the past nine days.

Its seven-day average peaked July 24 at 201.3. It was 195.9 through July 27.

Canyon County’s 14-day average peaked July 27 at 145.6.

Its seven-day average peaked July 21 at 170.4 and was down to 130.1 on July 27.
