New coronavirus cases drop to single digits, but deaths reported in Ada, Elmore counties

After a two-day reprieve, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reported two new deaths due to COVID-19 on Saturday.

The new fatalities were in Ada and Elmore counties, increasing Ada’s death toll to 15 and Elmore’s to two. Statewide there have been 56 coronavirus-related deaths.

Boise-based Central District Health, which serves Ada and Elmore counties, provides case-specific information only for the first death in each county.

Only the Panhandle and Eastern Idaho public health districts updated their websites Saturday, but neither district had new cases. Using IDHW data, there were nine new confirmed coronavirus cases, for a total of 1,762 throughout the state. Cases were added in Ada (3 new, 615 total), Blaine (1 new, 481 total), Canyon (3 new, 219 total), Elmore (1 new, 27 total) and Twin Falls (1 new, 131 total) counties.

IDHW estimates that 938 cases are “presumed recovered,” and there also are 127 “probable cases” throughout the state.

Health and Welfare reported that 19,565 tests had been completed statewide by the end of the day Saturday. About 9.0% have been positive for COVID-19. There have been 169 hospitalizations, 72 admissions to the ICU and 234 health care workers who have been infected, according to IDHW. The hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.
