Lemhi County gets first coronavirus case; Idaho goes without a death for 2nd day in a row

For the first time since April 1-2, Idaho went back-to-back days without announcing a new death due to the coronavirus.

There were 27 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Friday, increasing the state total to 1,753, according to reports from Idaho’s seven health districts. However, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare estimates that 867 of those cases are “presumed recovered,” and there also are 120 “probable cases” throughout the state.

Lemhi County, which encompasses the cities of Salmon and Leadore, became the 33rd county in Idaho with a confirmed case of coronavirus. Eastern Idaho Public Health said that a female in her 40s contracted the virus by community transmission. The woman did not require hospitalization and is recovering at home.

Idaho now has community spread in 15 counties: Ada, Bingham, Blaine, Bonneville, Canyon, Elmore, Gem, Jefferson, Jerome, Kootenai, Lemhi, Madison, Payette, Teton and Twin Falls.

Friday’s new cases were in reported in Ada (6 new, 612 total), Blaine (2 new, 480 total), Canyon (4 new, 216 total), Jerome (1 new, 37 total), Lemhi (1 new, 1 total), Nez Perce (3 new, 49 total), Owyhee (2 new, 8 total), Payette (1 new, 11 total), Twin Falls (6 new, 130 total) and Washington (1 new, 2 total) counties.

Health and Welfare reported 19,361 tests had been completed statewide at the end of the day Friday. About 9.1% have been positive for COVID-19. There have been 168 hospitalizations, 71 admissions to the ICU and 233 health care workers who have been infected, according to IDHW. The hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.
