Basque Block build-up? A 3-story building is proposed there. What we know

An Eagle corporation is looking to increase its footprint in Downtown Boise with a new mixed-use building on the city’s popular Basque Block.

Heath One LLC enlisted Pivot North Architecture to examine expanding its office building at the corner of Capitol Boulevard and Grove Street into a combination office and events space, according to preliminary documents filed with the city on Dec. 4. The three-story, 15,843-square-foot plan would slot into the Basque Block in what’s now a parking lot between the offices of Freeform, an interior design firm; and Bardenay, a restaurant and distillery.

Though listed as 176 S. Capitol Blvd., the expansion would open onto Grove Street — and into the Basque Block.

Ian McLaughlin of Pivot North declined to comment on the project, referring the Idaho Statesman to Jeff Heath, CEO of Freeform, whom he said owned the project. Heath did not respond to a phone call for comment.

Heath One, which owns Freeform’s downtown Boise offices, was founded by Mark Heath, according to state records. The application lists a residential address in Eagle owned by Stephanie Heath., according to Ada County records.

McLaughlin’s initial filing conceives of a three-story building with an event space and possible retail on the first floor with two stories of offices above. The idea may include roof decks, McLaughlin said, as well as landscaping between the two buildings.

One of the oldest streets in downtown Boise, Grove has been a focus of the city officials and developers alike in recent years.

The portion between Capitol Boulevard and 6th Street celebrates the city’s Basque community and heritage. Known as the Basque Block, it’s home to the Basque Center, Basque Museum and Cultural Center, Bar Gernika, Leku Ona restaurant and the Basque Market.
