The Meridian Costco is still set to open — but later than previously announced

An opening date has been set for the new Meridian Costco: Oct. 30.

Crews began work on the store at the intersection of Ten Mile Road and Chinden Boulevard in April. Work on the store was estimated to cost $2.1 million. Originally, the store hoped to host a grand opening on Oct. 15, but the date was just pushed back.

This will be the wholesale grocer’s third Treasure Valley store, after the stores on Cole Road in Boise and off Midland Boulevard in Nampa.

The Meridian City Council approved the new Costco in October 2018. Its original design was revised to give the store a warmer feel. The city’s approval was challenged by some neighbors in court in February 2019. Their petition for judicial review was shut down by Fourth District Judge Nancy Baskin, who said that they “failed to show how any of their substantial rights were infringed by the approval of this development.”

Costco agreed to pay for the upfront costs to widen Chinden Boulevard from Highway 16 to Linder Road. Through Idaho’s Sales Tax Anticipation Revenue, or STAR, program, the state will pay back Costco for the road improvements using sales tax revenue that the grocery story generates.

The developer of Orchard Park, the 79-acre development on Linder Road and Chinden Boulevard that will feature a new WinCo, will also pay upfront to widen Chinden from Linder to Locust Grove road through the same program.

Costco’s grand opening event will start at 8 a.m. at 3404 W. Chinden Blvd.
