Here’s what we know about Idaho’s 40,907 confirmed coronavirus cases (Oct. 6)
We have moved our COVID-19 case updates into a new post. Find updates here.
This post reflects information through Oct. 6, 2020.
• • •
We’ll track Idaho’s confirmed cases of the coronavirus, which causes the COVID-19 disease, in this post. We’ll also update with the testing numbers around the state.
Idahoans tested: 321,794*
Idaho confirmed cases: 40,907
Idaho probable cases: 4,397
Idaho COVID-19-related deaths: 493
*This number only includes people with results returned; each person is only counted once even if they had multiple tests.
Stats: Through Oct. 6, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reports 1,932 hospitalizations, 468 admissions to the ICU and 2,983 health care workers who have been infected. The hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives. About 12.7% of Idahoans tested have been positive.
Note: The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare estimates the number of patients who have recovered from the coronavirus. That was 23,288 people through Oct. 6.
Data as of 6:37 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6 (The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare website updates statewide numbers by 5 p.m. each day; individual health districts can update their numbers at different intervals).

BEHIND THE STORY
MOREWhy our case numbers might differ from the state's
The Idaho Statesman is tabulating confirmed coronavirus cases from Idaho’s seven health districts as they’re reported. The health districts report cases on their own schedules — some issue press releases, some simply update totals on their websites. And the reports happen at various times throughout the day.
The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, meanwhile, updates its statewide numbers once a day at about 5 p.m. Its numbers only include the cases the health districts have reported directly to the department. In some cases, health districts have reported cases publicly but not to the department by the daily deadline.
We break out each day’s new cases by county and provide details on each case when available here.

The individual under investigation did not travel and had no identified contact with another person with COVID-19. Public Health officials expect more confirmed cases in the community.”
“It no longer matters where it started, this virus is now in our community. He continues to stay in isolation and is being monitored by Eastern Idaho Public Health.
“Unless you are contacted by Eastern Idaho Public Health, you are not at increased risk for exposure to this individual and do not need to seek testing,” said Geri Rackow, director of Eastern Idaho Public Health.

The woman who was the first person in Idaho with a confirmed case of the novel coronavirus is a student at Idaho State University’s Meridian campus, the university announced.

The woman had returned from a conference in New York City, said Elke Shaw-Tulloch, administrator of public health for the Department of Health and Welfare. Three other attendees at that conference have tested positive for the coronavirus, which causes the COVID-19 disease.
Idaho State shut down the Meridian campus March 13 for cleaning before the positive test result was known. The samples were taken from the woman late March 12, according to state health officials, and tested March 13.
The campus is located at 1311 E. Central Drive, near the crossing of Locust Grove Road and Interstate 84.
The woman was last on campus March 10, Idaho State’s announcement said. It was signed by President Kevin Satterlee.
“All potentially impacted individuals who had contact with the student have already been notified and are being monitored,” Satterlee wrote. “Central District Health (CDH) is contacting those faculty, staff and students who had closest contact with the student to provide further guidance. If you are not contacted by CDH or our University Health Center, then there is no reason for you to have elevated concern. CDH has advised us that this is not an illness that is spread through brief, casual contact.”
