This exploding Boise chain opened 5 area restaurants. Suddenly, one isn’t like the others

It seems like yesterday that Nara Ramen and Izakaya made its Boise debut on State Street.

It’s actually been just over three years ago.

Since then, the Idaho-based brand has erupted. The Nara chain now has four locations in Boise, plus a fifth in Meridian.

But the original store at 7610 W. State St. is getting an overhaul — practically overnight.

In a business decision, Nara on State has changed its name to Nara Teriyaki and Wok. There’s no ramen on the menu anymore. Instead, the restaurant will serve teriyaki bowls and Chinese food.

Why the overhaul?

With five locations all roughly within a 20-minute driving radius, Nara on State was the only one operating fast food-style, explained Stephanie Nguyen, regional manager. No alcohol was available, and there was no sushi on the menu.

That was pushing customers to the other locations, she said in a message. Nara’s other restaurants are called Nara Ramen and Sushi Bar.

So the new concept, Nara Teriyaki and Wok, was born.

“We are hoping with this change,” she said, “we can add more dining options for the Garden City, Boise, Eagle community.”

The transformation applies only on State, where the restaurant closed Wednesday for remodeling. It should reopen by Thursday or Friday, she said.

“All other Naras remain the same menu and concept,” she added.

In addition to the Treasure Valley locations, Nara Ramen also has locations in Twin Falls, Logan, Utah, and Bismarck, North Dakota. In Idaho, Kuna and Burley can expect Nara Ramen restaurants in the future, Nguyen previously told the Statesman.
