Prep football recap: Playoff bids, league titles decided across Southwest Idaho

The Idaho high school football state playoff picture began to take shape after Friday’s slate of games across the Treasure Valley.

Rocky Mountain, Mountain View, Middleton and Capital punched their tickets to the playoffs, while wins by Vallivue and Skyview altered the playoff race in the final regular-season games in the 5A SIC.

Here’s a look at how District Three teams fared in Friday’s matchups.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN 42, KUNA 13

The Grizzlies clinched the No. 3 seed in the 6A state playoffs and a first-round home game thanks to a win over the Kavemen.

Rocky Mountain (8-1) racked up a season-high 509 total yards, averaging 11.1 yards per play, highlighted by 354 yards on the ground.

Junior running back Oakley Baxter led the charge with 119 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries. Quarterback Kaelan Custer added 91 yards and a TD on six touches while completing 8-of-9 passes for another 91 yards, including a touchdown pass to junior Parker Kleinkopf.

DJ Governor scored both touchdowns for Kuna (2-7), totaling 55 rushing yards on 13 carries.

CAPITAL 50, BOISE 14

The Eagles qualified for the 6A state playoffs for the second year in a row and will travel to Middleton next week after taking down the Brave.

Quarterback Brayden Dudley completed 9-of-15 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, and Zander Grow matched him on the ground with three TDs and 112 yards on 16 carries for Capital (5-4).

Quincy Clay caught two touchdown passes and racked up 166 receiving yards on six receptions.

Stats were not reported for Boise (4-5), which now will need some MaxPreps ranking luck to make the playoffs.

MIDDLETON 23, OWYHEE 21

The Vikings blocked a 19-yard field goal with 32 seconds left to assure themselves a 6A state playoff berth. Middleton will host Capital in the first round.

A week after rushing for more than 300 yards, Jake Perez totaled 152 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries to lead Middleton (6-3).

Carsen McConkie’s 38-yard field goal in the fourth quarter proved the difference, giving the Vikings just enough room to withstand Owyhee’s comeback bid. Quarterback Briar Baughman added 118 passing yards, including a 6-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Lowe.

Logan Haustveit led the Storm with 103 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, including a 6-yard TD run in the fourth quarter that pulled Owyhee (5-4) within two. Haustveit also completed 7-of-9 passes for 108 yards.

Owyhee can still qualify for the playoffs via an at-large berth, but it will need to wait until Sunday for the final MaxPreps rankings to come out to see if they earned a spot.

BISHOP KELLY 35, EMMETT 16

Nursing a three-point lead at halftime, the top-ranked Knights outscored Emmett 19-3 in the second half to wrap up an undefeated regular season and clinch home-field advantage through the state semifinals.

BK quarterback Ben Avella finished 12-for-17 for 156 yards and two TDs, while Ryan Arellano ran for 73 yards and two scores on 13 carries.

Bishop Kelly (9-0, 6-0 5A SIC) won’t learn its first-round playoff opponent until Sunday when the final MaxPreps rankings are released. Emmett (4-5, 2-4) started the week as the last at-large team in the postseason and must wait to see if it can hold onto the berth despite the loss.

SKYVIEW 30, RIDGEVUE 23

The Hawks kept their slim 5A playoff hopes alive with an upset of the Warhawks.

Skyview (3-6, 2-4) scored the go-ahead touchdown with 7:33 remaining in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard pass from Trevan Plew to Kimball Robinson.

Plew went 19-for-30 through the air for 191 yards and three TDs, while Robinson finished with eight catches for 55 yards and two scores.

Ridgevue tied the game at 23-all on Hunter Schmittel’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Dante Brinegar with 1:58 left in the third quarter. Schmittel was 12-for-27 passing for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions.

Jarom Walker led the Warhawks (6-3, 3-3) on the ground with 87 yards and a TD on 15 carries.

VALLIVUE 22, NAMPA 14

The Falcons held the Bulldogs to a field goal in the second half to complete the comeback win and wrap up a 5A state playoff spot.

Vallivue’s victory — combined with Ridgevue’s loss — secures the district’s No. 2 seed and a first-round home game.

Trailing 14-8 at halftime, Vallivue (5-4, 4-2) scored on touchdown runs by Seth Agenbroad and Onix Carson in the second half to steal the victory. Carson finished with 169 yards and two TDs on 23 carries, and quarterback Shane Osuna totaled 108 passing yards.

Kartez Hernandez scored both touchdowns for Nampa (1-8, 1-5).

COLUMBIA 42, CANYON RIDGE 13

The Wildcats wrapped up an at-large berth in the 5A state playoffs after a nonconference win over the Riverhawks.

Running back Jackson Cheslak totaled 160 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries for Columbia (6-3), which earned just the third playoff berth in program history.

Columbia broke open a 7-7 game just before halftime courtesy of a 95-yard interception return by senior linebacker Jake Myers. Easton Lott added three catches for 169 yards and a touchdown.

FRUITLAND 52, MCCALL-DONNELLY 27

The Grizzlies kept their undefeated season rolling with 516 yards and seven touchdowns in their 4A SRV regular-season finale against the Vandals.

Kelvin Obot recorded a safety for Fruitland, and quarterback Titus Vidlak inflicted damage on both sides of the ball. Vidlak grabbed an interception on defense and also went 13-for-26 passing for 298 yards and five touchdowns.

Joel Philpot (125 yards) and Spencer Tracy (69 yards) both caught two TD passes for the Grizzlies (9-0, 5-0).

Stats were not reported for McCall-Donnelly (5-4, 2-3).
