Prep football recap: BK hangs on. Mtn View rallies in last seconds. Meridian roars back
Bishop Kelly’s Reed Martin doesn’t get to rush the passer from a stand-up position very often.
The Knights might want to reconsider that.
The senior came off the edge and destroyed Vallivue quarterback Isaac Moore with 12 seconds left Friday, forcing a fumble and sealing the top-ranked Knights’ 21-14 victory in a battle atop the 5A SIC standings.
Martin dipped his right shoulder and ripped through the hands of Vallivue tackle Keagan Bittick (6-5, 295 pounds) for a textbook move. Martin’s speed surprised Moore, who never saw the monster hit coming and soon found his feet above his head.
The sheer force sent the ball flying, and Bishop Kelly’s Luke Sumner pounced on the fumble, once and for all ending the Falcons’ comeback.
“Reed murdered that dude,” Bishop Kelly sophomore linebacker Nik Ciovacco said. “I hope he’s OK. But it was a great play by Reed.”
Martin’s contributions weren’t limited to a single play, though. He also saved the Knights’ defense moments earlier, shedding two blockers and teaming up with Bryce Root to stonewall Vallivue on fourth-and-3 at the BK 41-yard line with 2:34 left.
Both of Martin’s game-changing plays fit into the theme of the night as Bishop Kelly’s defense rode to the rescue time and time again.
The Knights scored on their first three possessions and jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. But Bishop Kelly (6-1, 4-0) struggled offensively the rest of the night. BK turned the ball over twice in the third quarter and recorded only a single first down in the second half, leaving its defense on the field for nearly the entire half.
Vallivue (4-2, 3-1) chipped away and stole the momentum when Onix Carson punched in a 3-yard touchdown on fourth-and-1, making it a seven-point game. Carson ran for 73 of his game-high 107 yards in the fourth quarter alone. But Bishop Kelly’s defense found a way to make just enough plays and never let the Falcons land a knockout blow.
“We knew that if we ran our stuff and executed, we’d be good,” Martin said. “We have a great defense, great players. When we all work together, there’s nobody that can stop us.”
Martin barely missed out on a game-ending sack earlier on the final drive, eventually leading to a Bishop Kelly pass interference penalty and a Vallivue first down. Struggling to catch his breath, he asked to skip his traditional three-point stance on the fateful and final defensive play. To his surprise, his coaches agreed.
“That’s totally rare. Usually only one of our skinnier D-linemen gets to do it,” Martin joked. “But since it was a late passing down, our coach said I could get a running start, and it worked out.”
Bishop Kelly quarterback Ben Avella led the Knights to a fast start before finishing the night 9-for-17 for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Tylan Kaschmitter hauled in one of those TDs, turning a screen into a 14-yard score. Kaschmitter also ran for 27 yards and the decisive score on fourth down in the second quarter, helping the Knights secure their 17th straight win over Vallivue.
Bishop Kelly travels to Ridgevue (2-4, 0-4) next week, while Vallivue hosts Columbia (3-4, 1-4).

HOMEDALE 29, FRUITLAND 28
With Homedale’s chance at a seventh-straight SRV title slipping away, the Trojans rolled the dice and converted a two-point conversion to upset No. 1-ranked Fruitland.
