Prep football recap: Mtn View holds off Owyhee. Meridian cruises. Kuna rallies for OT win
Brian Compton notched his first win as Mountain View’s head coach Saturday night. But he had to wait until the final minute to breathe a sigh of relief.
Owyhee mounted a late 14-point rally, but But Mountain View did just enough to hang on for a 34-31 victory on the road.
The No. 4-ranked Mavericks (1-2, 1-0 5A SIC River) opened the season with back-to-back losses to No. 1 Rocky Mountain and No. 2 Meridian. But the win over division foe Owyhee (3-1, 1-0) is the only one that counts in the race to return to the 5A SIC championship game.
Mountain View running back Justin McGee gave the Storm trouble on the ground and through the air. He ran for 114 yards on 22 carries, and the converted quarterback added a 25-yard TD pass to wide receiver Collin Rogers.
“Justin is a really dynamic player,” Compton said. “We’ve asked him to do all kinds of things for us this year. He gives us a little bit of versatility with different things we can do.”
Mountain View’s defense forced five turnovers — two fumbles and three interceptions, including a 20-yard pick-six by linebacker Maximus Maile. Maile’s touchdown spotted the Mavericks a comfortable 34-17 lead with 8 minutes left in the third quarter.
Or so they thought. Irvin connected with wide receiver Gabe Alvarado on a 6-yard touchdown to trim the lead with 5:11 left in the fourth. And Mountain View’s Dawson Wahl fumbled a punt snap, setting up Irvin and Alvarado for a second time with an 18-yard TD with 3:22 left.
The Storm got one final possession at midfield, but Mavericks linebacker Ivan Perkins sacked Irvin on fourth down to seal the victory.
“(The defense is) getting better every week,” Compton said. “Obviously we weren’t perfect, but they’re playing really hard and they’re playing physical. They really stepped up and made some big plays in some key moments.”
Irvin went 30-for-39 for 304 passing yards and two TDs. Alvarado finished with 12 catches for 201 yards and three TDs, including a 39-yard touchdown pass from freshman receiver Ryan Brekke.
MERIDIAN 56, MIDDLETON 7
