Prep football recap: Emmett, Nampa Christian QBs throw for 6 TDs. Notus rolls to win
Poor air quality throughout Southwest Idaho led to a wave of cancellations and rescheduling of games for area high school football teams.
No 5A or 4A Southern Idaho Conference team played Friday night inside the state of Idaho. The lone team to kick off was Emmett, which took on Lake City in a neutral-site game in Baker City, Oregon.
Many planned to reschedule for Saturday, but forecasts from the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality predict worsening conditions.
That left Friday night open to District Three’s smaller schools in the western Treasure Valley, where the air quality was better.
EMMETT 55, LAKE CITY 27
Dakota Perry threw for six touchdowns as the Huskies (2-1) knocked off 5A Lake City (1-2). No further details were reported.
NAMPA CHRISTIAN 61, PARMA 8
Aiden Thompson threw six touchdown passes to lead the Trojans (1-2) to a blowout win at home.
Thompson finished 10-for-12 for 221 yards. Devon McDaniel stood as his top receiver, hauling in three passes — all TDs — for 39 yards. Luke Lady turned two catches into 39 yards and two TDs, and Maiko Nevarez also caught a touchdown.
Charlie Camacho ran for 70 yards and the lone TD for Parma (0-1), which lost its 21st straight game.
NOTUS 62, CLEARWATER VALLEY 22
Carter Woodland ran for 247 yards and three touchdowns, spearheading a Pirate attack that ran for 409 yards in a nonconference win.
Eli Hill also ran for 115 yards and three TDs, and Grayson Benitez added three catches for 72 yards and two scores as Notus (2-1) won its second straight.
GARDEN VALLEY 64, IDAHO CITY 12
Gavin Kelly turned 11 carries into 92 yards and three touchdowns, and Tacoma Kelly threw for two scores and ran for another as the Wolverines improved to 2-0.
Zade Thompson also caught and ran for touchdowns as Garden Valley spread the ball around, with seven ball carriers and seven receivers catching a pass.
Stats for Idaho City (0-3) were not reported.
HORSESHOE BEND 53, WILDER 8
Blayne Meyer ran for 209 yards and three touchdowns, caught a touchdown pass, and blocked and returned a punt for a score as the Mustangs (3-0) ran away with a nonconference victory.
Kaelun Jones also ran for 154 yards and two TDs for Horseshoe Bend.
TIMBERLINE (WEIPPE) 48, SALMON RIVER 26
Salmon River cut the lead to two points on Tyrus Swift’s 8-yard touchdown with 6:24 left in the fourth quarter, but Timberline’s Cordell Bovey returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a score, part of 20 unanswered points for the Spartans (1-2) to finish the game.
Gabe Zavala went 15-of-26 for 163 yards and two TDs, and he ran for a 95-yard score for Salmon River (1-2).
PARMA COACH RESIGNS
Parma football coach Cassidy Kotte resigned on Tuesday, and assistant coach Justin Koogler will take over the program on an interim basis, Parma Superintendent Stoney Winston confirmed to the Idaho Statesman.
Koogler will become the Panthers’ fifth head coach in the past five seasons, pending school board approval Monday.
Parma went 0-9 last fall in Kotte’s first season, stretching its losing streak to 20 games. Only 18 players were listed on a varsity roster submitted to the Statesman, and Parma canceled its scheduled season opener last week against Vale, Oregon.
“It was self-reflection on his part,” Winston said of Kotte’s resignation. “He just believed it was time for someone else to step up.”
Kotte could not be reached for comment. He previously went 9-17 in three seasons at Nampa Christian.
