Prep football recap: Rocky hands Skyview 1st loss. Mountain View blanks Owyhee. Capital rolls.
Skyview High’s perfect start to the 2021 season hit a brick wall against Rocky Mountain.
The defending 5A state champion Grizzlies scored three unanswered touchdowns in the first quarter and cruised to a 49-21 win Friday night on the Hawks’ home field in Nampa.
Rocky Mountain junior running back Art Williams bulldozed his way to 164 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries, while junior quarterback Tegan Sweaney had 206 yards through the air with TD passes to Hunter Steacker, Luke Luchini and Lucas Leavitt.
Senior defensive lineman Mason Jacobsen totaled a team-best 11 tackles as the Grizzlies (4-1, 2-0 5A SIC Foothills) sacked Skyview quarterback Max Cutforth four times for a combined loss of 15 yards.
Cutforth had a hand in two of Skyview’s three touchdowns, rushing for a 4-yard score and completing a 30-yard TD pass to TerRyck Pennington.
Atonio Fifita amassed 183 yards and one touchdown on 28 carries for the Hawks (4-1, 0-1 5A SIC Foothills).
Borah 28, Centennial 7
Borah running back Parker Rushton eclipsed 200 rushing yards for the second straight game to carry the Lions to victory.
On the heels of his 213-yard, five-TD performance against Boise, Rushton managed 269 yards and three scores against the Patriots.
Borah (2-3, 1-1 5A SIC River) nearly posted a shutout if not for Keyon Horton’s 9-yard TD pass to Holden Holliday with 19 seconds remaining in the game.
The Borah defense made life difficult for Horton, as Bradly Toth grabbed one interception, while Crispin Simbaragje sacked Horton twice and Trace Freeman and Louden Hudson had one sack each.
No individual stats were provided for Centennial (1-4, 1-2 5A SIC River).
Mountain View 56, Owyhee 0
The Mavericks (5-0, 2-0 5A SIC River) totaled 556 yards of offense — 284 on the ground and 272 through the air — while holding Owyhee to just 161 total yards.
Mountain View’s Sosaia Raass led the charge against Owyhee with 117 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. Dallas Slocum contributed two rushing TDs, and Quintez Evans had one. Starting quarterback Dawson Wahl completed 12-of-14 attempts for 250 yards and two scores before giving way to backup Justin McGee.
Owyhee (0-5, 0-4 5A SIC River) had 97 rushing yards, led by Tim Jamerson’s 50 yards on 21 touches.
Timberline 39, Boise 20
Senior Liam Reeves returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown to set the tone for Timberline in a win over Boise on Thursday night at Dona Larsen Park.
The Wolves’ defense grabbed four interceptions, recovered one fumble and racked up six sacks.
Senior receiver Garrett Lavin finished with eight receptions for 125 yards and three touchdowns, and running back Taylor Marcum amassed 143 yards and two TDs on 18 carries to lead the Wolves (4-1, 0-1 5A SIC Foothills).
Boise (1-4) got a 2-yard rushing touchdown from Alex Hess, and Caleb Allen and Ford Songer each hauled in a 12-yard TD reception.
Capital 48, Kuna 21
Kuna struck first on a 20-yard pass from Cole Luekenga to Brayden White, but Capital seized the momentum from there.
The Eagles (4-1, 3-0 5A SIC River) scored seven straight touchdowns for a 48-7 lead after three quarters, beginning with a pair of TD runs from senior Jacob Olson. Capital then got tricky with an 8-yard TD pass from receiver Nate Cherry to quarterback Max Clark.
Clark threw for 403 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Ethan Castillo was his top target, totaling 128 yards on three catches, while tight end Kody Walk had six grabs for 115 yards.
With the game already out of reach, Luekenga threw two more TD passes in the fourth quarter to Gus Austin and Kolten Frost. Luekenga finished 25-for-37 through the air for 419 yards. White (6 catches, 103 yards), Austin (6-125) and Luke Snarr (6-135) were Kuna’s leading receivers.
Vallivue 54, Caldwell 12
After recovering the opening kickoff, Vallivue quarterback Santi Diaz tossed a 30-yard TD pass to Camryn Dean on the Falcons’ first play.
Caldwell (0-5, 0-3 4A SIC) answered with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Zaylor Bruegemen to Teddy Leyba, but the Cougars didn’t score again until late in the fourth quarter.
Carson Fox turned 25 carries into 203 yards and three touchdowns to help Vallivue (3-2, 2-1 4A SIC) to a 46-6 lead at the half. The Falcons collected 334 of their 402 total yards on the ground.
Bruegemen finished 8-for-20 passing for 88 yards and two TDs, both of which went to Leyba.
Emmett 40, Nampa 30
Senior quarterback Caden Young put the final nail in the coffin with a 1-yard TD run with 1:12 remaining, his sixth touchdown of the night.
Young ran for 162 yards and four scores on 33 carries, and he completed 6-of-7 passes for 87 yards and two more TDs.
Caseyn Pearson and Tanner Wilkerson each caught TD passes for the Huskies (4-1, 3-0 4A SIC), and running back Jeff Lockett contributed 133 rushing yards on 26 touches.
Nampa (1-4, 1-2 4A SIC) pulled within two points, 32-30, when quarterback Gabe Navarro found the end zone on a 4-yard run with 6:37 left in the fourth quarter. Navarro scored three touchdowns on the ground and completed 20-of-26 passes for 328 yards with a 65-yard TD pass to Trais Higgins.
Middleton 43, Ridgevue 19
Middleton held onto a share of first place in the 4A SIC with its third straight win.
The Vikings (4-1, 3-0 4A SIC) totaled 489 yards of offense, with 405 of those yards through the air. Quarterback Ky McClure led Middleton’s attack by completing 21-of-39 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns. McClure also scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter.
Owen Graviet was McClure’s top target, hauling in 10 receptions for 130 yards and a score.
Ridgevue (0-4, 0-3 4A SIC) tied the game at 7-7 with 8 seconds left in the first quarter and pulled within 21-13 at the start of the second half before Middleton scored three straight touchdowns to pull away. Warhawks QB Cole McDonald ran for one touchdown and threw for another.
Bishop Kelly 45, Columbia 0
The Knights (3-2, 2-1 4A SIC) held Columbia to 143 total yards, six first downs and a 1-for-11 performance on third down for the shutout.
Bishop Kelly showcased a potent passing attack as quarterback Hadley Smith finished 12-of-21 for 270 yards and a TD. But running back Seth Knothe often finished the drives, scoring four TDs and running for 28 yards and 15 carries.
Matt Davis led Columbia (1-4, 1-2 4A SIC), finishing 9-of-16 for 78 yards.
Homedale 49, McCall-Donnelly 7
Hayden Kincheloe accounted for more than half of Homedale’s 508 yards on offense as the Trojans ran over McCall-Donnelly in the 3A Snake River Valley opener for both teams.
Kincheloe amassed 273 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, quarterback Jaxon Dines scored two rushing TDs and Trenton Fisher added a 14-yard TD run in the third quarter.
Fisher also led the Trojans (5-0, 1-0 3A SRV) defensively with 10 total tackles. And Eli Heck scored Homedale’s seventh and final TD with a 30-yard interception return in the third quarter.
McCall-Donnelly (2-2, 0-1 3A SRV) got its only score on a 90-yard kickoff return by Cole Burtenshaw in the first quarter.
Weiser 40, Fruitland 18
The No. 2-ranked Wolverines trailed 18-6 in the second quarter. But they pitched a second-half shutout and scored 34 unanswered points to run away with the 3A SRV opener for both teams.
Weiser (5-0, 1-0 3A SRV) quarterback Brett Spencer finished 7-of-7 for 158 yards and three TDs through the air, adding another 72 yards rushing. Willy Shirts ran for 69 yards and a TD, and he scored a defensive touchdown. And Brock Spencer turned eight touches into 90 yards and a score.
No stats were provided for Fruitland (2-2, 0-1 3A SRV).
Melba 44, Cole Valley Christian 21
Behind the cumulative efforts of Trace Stimpson, Gabe Shaffer and Kaden Dayley, Melba totaled 344 yards and four TDs on the ground in a 2A Western Idaho Conference opener against Cole Valley Christian.
The Mustangs (3-2, 1-0 2A WIC) grabbed three interceptions on defense, getting one each from Noah West, Dillon Stosich and Dayley. Stosich also caught a TD pass and returned a punt 80 yards for another score.
The Chargers (3-2, 0-1 2A WIC) only trailed by two points after the first quarter and one point at halftime. No individual stats were provided for Cole Valley Christian.
Nampa Christian 76, Valley 0
Nampa Christian showed no mercy in a nonconference game against winless Valley, which has been held without a touchdown in four straight games.
The Trojans (4-1) had a 62-0 lead by halftime and totaled 542 yards of offense while taking advantage of five Valley turnovers. Nampa Christian scored eight touchdowns on the ground, getting three apiece from Dane Bradshaw and Caleb Johnson, as well as two from Devon McDaniel.
Muluken Knudsen added a 46-yard punt return TD, and Josh Tiersma and Bradshaw each caught touchdown passes.
Quarterback Landon Cheney finished 4-for-8 passes for 148 yards and two scores.
Vale (Ore.) 12, New Plymouth 6
Vale broke a 6-6 tie courtesy of a 27-yard touchdown pass with 4:27 left in the game to edge New Plymouth (2-2).
New Plymouth’s only touchdown came on an 85-yard pass from Casey Arritola to Connor Hawker midway through the second quarter. Hawker caught two passes for 125 yards.
Arritola went 3-for-9 passing for 130 yards, and Kyle Rice was the Pilgrims’ leading rusher with 74 yards on 12 carries.
Notus 54, Camas County 12
Pressure from Notus nose guard Aaron Jimenez and defensive end Julian Gallegos overwhelmed Camas County in a nonconference matchup.
Jimenez collected four sacks and seven total tackles, while Gallegos made three sacks and five tackles as the Pirates (3-1) held Camas County scoreless entering the fourth quarter.
Carter Woodland contributed two rushing touchdowns, returned a kickoff 85 yards for a score and returned a punt 50 yards for a TD. Quarterback Kaeden Clemens had a hand in four TDs, too, completing 6-of-11 passes for 175 yards and 3 touchdowns, plus a rushing TD.
Elijah Martin totaled 120 yards and two touchdowns on three reception and added 10 tackles on defense.
Wilder 12, Rimrock 6
Thanks to a pick-six just before halftime, Rimrock (1-2, 1-1) carried a 6-0 lead into the fourth quarter of this 1A Division I Western Idaho Conference matchup. But the fourth quarter — and the game — belonged to Wilder (3-2, 1-0).
Adrian Miramontes connected with Jacob Sandoval for the game-tying TD, and Isaac Rodriguez scored the game-winning touchdown on the ground.
Sandoval finished with five catches for 59 yards, and Miramontes went 3-for-10 passing and added 63 yards on the ground in this defensive showdown.
Alex Martinez led Rimrock with 14 tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and an interception. Aden Aquiso also had 14 tackles and an interception.
Horseshoe Bend 50, Watersprings 30
Horseshoe Bend remained unbeaten with a nonconference victory over Watersprings.
Junior running back Blayne Meyer racked up 243 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, and senior quarterback Colten Meyer added 124 rushing yards and a score for the Mustangs (4-0).
Sophomore running back Kaelun Jones had three TDs in all, including an 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Council 56, Tri-Valley 12
In the 1A Division II Long Pin Conference opener for both teams, the Lumberjacks dominated Tri-Valley in Council.
Quarterback Josh Gipe went 11-for-19 through the air for 268 yards and four touchdowns to lead Council (3-1, 1-0). And Thatcher McClinn returned an interception 60 yards for a score.
No individual statistics were reported for Tri-Valley (2-3, 0-1).
