Prep football roundup: Four teams punch tickets to state; one undefeated team falls
The Borah High football team was down nine starters heading into Thursday’s matchup against Mountain View, including starting quarterback Jake Standlee and backup Nate Huskey.
Instead of providing excuses, the Lions trotted out 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior receiver Ellis Magnuson to run the wildcat.
And it nearly worked.
The injury-depleted Lions stayed with the Mavericks for three quarters before Mountain View scored the game’s final three touchdowns for a 48-24 victory at Dona Larsen Park.
“It was really tough to just kind of figure out what to prepare for, so probably we spread ourselves thin with reps during the week because we were prepping for everything,” Mountain View coach Judd Benedick said. “It didn’t work very well, and it took us a while to adjust.”

Standlee suffered an undiagnosed forearm injury against Boise last week, and Borah coach Jason Burton declined to reveal the injury after Thursday’s loss. Burton did say both Standlee and Huskey were “doubtful” for Borah’s game at Centennial next Friday.
“My hat’s off to them and their coaching staff, because their kids were fired up still to play, and they still played their butts off,” Benedick said. “They weren’t feeling sorry for themselves because they didn’t have their quarterback. They played awesome.”
The Lions (5-2) leaned heavily on the athletic and versatile duo of Magnuson and junior receiver/linebacker Austin Bolt out of the gate.
Magnuson drew the Mavericks’ defense in with his legs early in the Lions’ opening drive before airing it out for a 56-yard touchdown pass to Bolt and a 7-0 lead with 9:17 on the clock.
Kicker Kellan McCullough added a 24-yard field goal on the Lions’ second drive, which started after linebacker Jacob Batubenga forced a Mountain View fumble that Bolt recovered on the Mavs’ 35-yard line.
Bolt then powered his way to an 82-yard kickoff return to make it a 17-7 Borah lead after the first quarter.
Bolt accounted for all three of the Lions’ touchdowns, the last coming on a 1-yard fly sweep that brought Borah within 28-24 with 6:01 to go in the third quarter.
“I’m super proud of these guys, and that’s what I told them in the locker room,” Burton said. “... They came out and fought, and that’s all we can ask them to do.”
As impressive as the Lions’ effort was given the circumstances, the night belonged to Mountain View senior running back Jaymon Barrus, who assured the Mavericks (5-2) a playoff berth with 206 rushing yards and three TDs on 19 carries.
Senior tight end Joey Elwell, a Montana commit, provided the Mavericks’ counter punch with four receptions for 75 yards and two TDs.
“When we run the ball really well it opens it up for the skill guys and it opens it up for tight ends like me to get a few touches,” Elwell said. “It all starts up front. That’s kind of what we pride ourselves on is being nasty up front and opening up holes.”
Nampa 35, Middleton 28
Nampa is going to the state playoffs for the first time since 2009, and the Bulldogs knocked off the top-ranked and unbeaten Vikings to get there.
Quarterbacks Braden Minor and Donnie Estrada threw two touchdown passes each, and Jace Mann returned an interception 80 yards for a score to give Nampa (6-1, 5-1 4A SIC) its sixth straight win.
Middleton (6-1, 5-1) entered the game averaging a classification-best 48.5 points per game, but the Vikings scored a season-low 28 points and committed three turnovers.
Bishop Kelly 32, Kuna 15
Senior Matt Heilman started the second half with a 70-yard kickoff return, sparking Bishop Kelly (6-1, 6-1 4A SIC) to a win against Kuna (3-4, 2-4).
The game was tied 8-8 at halftime, and BK led 18-8 through three quarters.
Quarterback Beau Nelson gave the Knights some breathing room with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes, including a 99-yarder to Mike Stone.
Nelson finished 10-for-18 passing for 202 yards and three TDs without an interception to help the Knights secure a playoff berth for the seventh year in a row.
Homedale 63, Parma 0
Top-ranked Homedale pushed its record to 8-0 and simultaneously clinched a playoff berth with a shutout of 3A SRV foe Parma.
It was the third shutout of the season for the Homedale defense, which held the Panthers (1-6, 1-2) to 90 total yards and came up with two interceptions and a fumble.
Mason Kincheloe totaled 113 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 13 carries. The Trojans scored seven of their nine TDs on the ground.
