PLAYER OF THE YEAR: ASHER WILLIAMS, BONNERS FERRY
Why he is player of the year: After growing 4 inches, the 6-foot-4 sophomore guard led the Badgers to their first state championship game appearance in program history. He was a near automatic bucket, shooting 60% from the floor to rack up 18.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game.
Coach’s comment: “(He) is a tremendous player who can score inside, outside and midrange. He has great court vision, and brings energy and confidence to the court,” Bonners Ferry coach Nathan Williams said.
What others are saying: “He seemed to hit every big shot when they needed it most,” Kimberly coach Daren Garey said.
What’s next: He’ll return for his junior season trying to lift Bonners Ferry to new heights again.
JAXON DINES, HOMEDALE
The first-team all-state quarterback makes the first team in basketball for the second straight year. The 5-10 senior guard was a threat to score the second he crossed half court. He finished with 17.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.3 steals per game.
LUKE HIGGINSON, SNAKE RIVER
Already a three-year varsity player, the 6-1 junior guard led all of 3A with 20.8 points per game while shooting 52% from the floor. He added 4.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.0 blocks per game to lead the Panthers to the state semifinals.
STANTON HOWELL, MARSH VALLEY
The 3A baseball player of the year makes his third appearance on the all-state basketball team. The 6-2 senior guard posed a threat as a deadly shooter who could create his own shot. He averaged 20.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.7 steals.
KOY SANDERSON, SUGAR-SALEM
The 6-3 senior wing served as the vocal leader for the state champs. His length and athleticism altered countless shots for opponents, and he threw down several momentum-swinging dunks. He averaged 10.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals.
COACH OF THE YEAR: SHAWN FREEMAN, SUGAR-SALEM
He led the Diggers to a 23-3 record and their fourth state title in the past seven years.
