Note: The All-Idaho teams are chosen by each classification’s coaches. The Idaho Statesman hosts the voting process and publishes the results.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: DJ GREEN, MCCALL-DONNELLY
Why he is player of the year: A repeat player of the year, the 6-foot senior guard formed the backbone of the Vandals and led them to back-to-back runner-up trophies, both the best in program history. An elite offensive threat, he poured in 18.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.
Coach’s comment: “Most nights, he demands the full defensive attention of the opposition, seeing many different strategies to either wall him off from the paint or attempt to limit catches,” McCall-Donnelly coach Jason Tinney said.
What others are saying: “DJ found a way to win almost every night. … (I) loved and hated competing against him the last couple of seasons. Just a tremendous talent,” Homedale coach Cam Long said.
What’s next: He is weighing options to play in college.
STANTON HOWELL, MARSH VALLEY
A second-team pick last year, the 6-2 junior guard moves up to the first team after taking on a larger role this season. The lefty’s basketball IQ separated him from the pack, allowing him to both score and create, finishing with 14.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game.
JACKSON CUMMINS, KIMBERLY
The state champ’s natural leader always stepped up and delivered the key shot, rebound or steal in tight games. The 6-2 senior guard and two-time Sawtooth Central Idaho Conference player of the year averaged 10.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game.
JAXON BAIR, KIMBERLY
An Arkansas-bound decathlete, the 6-1 senior point guard dominated defensively and on the glass with his athleticism and toughness. He always drew the toughest defensive assignment but still had 6.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
JAXON DINES, HOMEDALE
The 5-11 junior guard presented a pick-your-poison option for defenses. Sit back and defend the paint, and he’d drain 3-pointers all day. Defend the arc and he’d blow by defenses and finish with either hand. He averaged 16.3 points, 1.1 assists and 2.4 steals.
COACH OF THE YEAR: DAREN GAREY, KIMBERLY
He built an elite defense that led the Bulldogs to their first state championship in 70 years.
